About the role:

The Assistant Irrigation Manager assists the Irrigation Manager in all aspects of managing the irrigation system. This includes the scheduling operation and maintenance of all irrigation equipment to ensure optimal water usage and plant health. This role involves supervising irrigation technicians conducting system inspections and troubleshooting issues. The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge of irrigation systems excellent problem-solving skills and a commitment to water conservation and sustainable practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in implementing irrigation schedules aligned with crop growth stages soil conditions and weather patterns.
  • Monitor soil moisture levels using probes sensors and manual checks and report findings to the Irrigation Manager.
  • Support fertigation programs by safely preparing mixing and applying nutrients and chemicals.
  • Operate and maintain irrigation infrastructure including pumps filters valves drip lines and sprinklers.
  • Conduct routine inspections carry out basic repairs and escalate major faults promptly.
  • Assist with scheduled maintenance programs to minimise downtime and maintain system reliability.
  • Inspect crops and fields regularly to assess water distribution plant health and soil condition.
  • Collect record and report irrigation and environmental data from moisture probes telemetry and weather stations.
  • Ensure irrigation activities comply with water licensing allocation WHS and environmental requirements.
  • Supervise and support seasonal irrigation staff providing training guidance and promoting safe work practices.

Qualifications Skills & Experiences

  • Understanding of irrigation systems (drip sprinkler fertigation) in horticulture.
  • Basic knowledge of crop water requirements soil-water relationships and plant nutrition.
  • Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Ability to collect record and report accurate data.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a proactive mindset
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications
  • Flexibility in hours worked to achieve operational targets.
  • Sound working knowledge of WH&S requirements.
  • A current drivers licence.
