Job Description

Position Title: 1.0 FTE Long-Term Substitute Elementary/Middle School Band/General Music Teacher

Reports to: Building Principals and Performing Arts Department Head

Terms of Employment: To cover a leave of absence from approximately February 23 to May 8 2026 $175 per diem non-benefits eligible position.

Position Responsibilities: Lexington Public Schools is seeking an energetic welcoming inclusive and supportive full-time long-term substitute band and general music teacher from February 23 to May 8 2026. The position includes directing the 7th and 8th Grade Bands at Diamond Middle School teaching small group band lessons to 5th Grade Band students in three of our elementary schools and teaching traditional General Music at Diamond and Clarke Middle addition this substitute position will serve as a secondary teacher for small-group specialized general music classes.

Curricular Expectations:

The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Provide high-quality band and general music instruction appropriate for elementary and middle school-aged students. While generalized lesson plans and repertoire will be provided by the teacher out on leave the candidate will:
    • Deliver instruction and repertoire effectively.
    • Craft learning experiences and lesson plans that are differentiated based on students individual needs while being mindful of our curricular arc and timeline.
    • Provide supportive constructive feedback to students and assess student progress over time.
    • Administer pre-created assessments and input grades into the standards-based grading system (TeacherEase).

The successful candidate will:

  • Collaborate positively with the instrumental and general music team.
  • Provide a learning environment that is positive welcoming safe and inclusive.
  • Cultivate a learning environment that is well-paced and enables smooth transitions between instructional activities.
  • Facilitate the existing classroom norms and procedures that ensure that classroom behaviors are respectful and that expectations are understood and embodied.
  • Communicate with students and families regarding class expectations deadlines and due dates and other pertinent information.
  • Attend all required faculty and department meetings as required by the school district.
  • Work collaboratively with building administration teacher aides colleagues and volunteers.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess appropriate licensure (or is in the process of obtaining it).

This position requires traveling between multiple school buildings during the school day. The employee must be able to transport themselves. The employee will be given a minimum of 30 minutes to travel between school buildings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls; and reach with hands or arms.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
