Main Street Project (MSP) is a community health Centre with a mandate to address the social determinants of health which give rise to issues of addiction physical and mental health issues and homelessness. MSP uses housing-first and harm reduction principles in the provision of a safe respectful and accessible place for individuals who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness in the community. Since 1972 MSP has been providing a range of services to Winnipegs most marginalized residents including emergency shelter and nutrition services drug and alcohol withdrawal management services health advocacy and support case management services housing support services food bank services and a mobile community outreach program.

Job Summary
Main Street Project (MSP) provides a range of low-barrier harm reductionfocused services including withdrawal management supportive housing and a community drop-in. Our programs offer food shelter harm reduction supplies safe spaces and pathways toward recovery housing and long-term stability. Services operate 365 days a year and are rooted in respect dignity and accessibility for all who enter our care.
The Casual Float Support Worker provides flexible coverage across multiple MSP programs including Protective Care Withdrawal Management Services (Mens and womens Non-Binary units) and Housing (Mainstay the Bell and Furby). This role offers break coverage and additional support as required assisting participants with daily needs crisis response eviction prevention harm reduction and capacity building.
Float Support Workers collaborate with participants to support individualized detox care plans housing goals and personal development focusing on independence harm reduction and tenant-defined success. They also work with participants to enhance self-awareness life skills and overall well-being while ensuring a safe and stable environment.
As part of a collaborative team the Float Support Worker upholds MSPs mission goals and values harm reduction choice equity diversity and respect while helping participants build capacity and move forward in their unique recovery and housing journeys.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate move-ins for community members entering housing adhering to established protocols and collaborating with external partners.
- Assist with medication management including proper storage distribution and documentation.
- Develop and implement programming initiatives to enhance the well-being and engagement of housing program participants.
- Collaborate with case managers on individualized care plans.
- Respond and support individuals experiencing crisis.
- Ensure residents understand program area processes and expectations.
- Respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations including assessing intervening and documenting critical incidents and seeking assistance as necessary.
- Conduct regular floor checks to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the housing premises.
- Coordinate and assist in ensuring meal service in Housing facilities are done in accordance with food handling guidelines.
- Provide comprehensive support to participants in planning problem-solving and addressing immediate needs such as food water clothing and other essential items.
- Offer non-judgmental support and connect participants with relevant resources and services both internal and external.
- Ensure that participants are well-informed about available internal and external resources services and programs.
- Coordinate and assist residents in connecting to resources including seeking out and providing information filing out application forms and submitting appropriately.
- Uphold professional standards of care in all interactions and service delivery.
- Foster collaborative relationships with external partners to optimize support for housing program participants.
- Maintain accurate and confidential electronic and physical records pertaining to program participants.
- Collect and submit required agency statistics promptly and accurately.
- Uphold cleanliness standards by following routine cleaning schedules for the program area during each shift.
Qualifications
- Relevant experience in the field of human services preferably with adults experiencing homelessness mental health challenges substance use issues or housing instability.
- Post-secondary education in addictions mental health or a related field is considered an asset.
- Compassion for and commitment to working with individuals who use substances and experience mental health challenges using a participant-centered care philosophy.
- Ability to apply Harm Reduction Housing First Trauma-Informed Care and Anti-Oppressive practices in day-to-day support of participants.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate and confidential records.
- Demonstrated skills in crisis intervention de-escalation and conflict resolution.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team and build strong relationships with external partners.
- Knowledge of the effects of poverty social determinants of health and culturally diverse populations.
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture and ability to apply the principles of the TRC Calls to Action MMIWG Calls to Justice and UNDRIP.
- Ability to contribute to and uphold a culturally safe inclusive and respectful environment for staff and participants.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both oral and written.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online databases.
- Lived experience relevant to the role will be considered an asset.
- Current CPR Basic First Aid and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certifications required; Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification considered an asset.
- Ability to provide satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and a clear Adult Abuse Registry Check (employee responsible for service charges).
Conditions of Employment
- Ability to meet to the physical demands required for the role including being on your feet for long period of time lifting up to 50 lbs. and cleaning duties (bending reaching push/pulling crouching)
- Exposure to biohazards including but not limited to blood bodily fluids and syringes
- Ability to work with individuals who use substances and/or experience mental health issues
- Ability to provide support in high intensity incidents including but not limited to medical emergencies and aggressive individuals
- Comfortable working in environment where Indigenous ceremonies and practices are actively taking place including Smudging
- Ability to assist in providing first aid when required
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Clear Vulnerable Sector Search and a Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check are required.
- Current CPR Basic First Aid and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certifications
- Valid drivers licence
