SDOT has an exciting opportunity for a collaborative detail-oriented and impact-driven Assistant Traffic Operations Review Engineer (under the Citys classification title of Assistant Civil Engineer). This position is part of SDOTs Transportation Operations Division (TOD) a team dedicated to delivering a safe reliable efficient and socially equitable transportation system that enhances Seattles environment and economic vitality.

Position Overview

SDOT is excited to announce a new Assistant Traffic Operations Review Engineer position under the citys classification of (Assistant Civil Engineer III). This position will play a key role in improving traffic safety and mobility across the city. Responsibilities include investigating traffic operations concerns evaluating innovative solutions to enhance safety and efficiency developing construction-ready design plans supporting construction coordination and updating asset information to maintain system addition this position will assist in the development and documentation of SDOT policies and guidelines and review transportation-related plans from SDOT programs to ensure compliance with relevant codes standards and City goals. The role involves collaborating with internal and external stakeholders supporting the Senior Engineer in day-to-day project oversight and contributing to the broader mission of delivering a safe and reliable transportation network for Seattle. Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations and field visits to assess traffic operational concerns document existing conditions and contribute to the resolution of complex and routine transportation challenges.
  • Develop construction-ready design plans for SDOT crew delivery.
  • Support construction coordination efforts working alongside city crews contractors and developers to ensure seamless integration of transportation elements in reviewed projects.
  • Assist with development and documentation of SDOT policies & guidelines.
  • Assist with review of internal and external projects to ensure compliance with city state and federal transportation codes standards and best practices.
  • Support the departments diversity equity and inclusion goals by ensuring projects align with Seattles Race and Social Justice Initiative.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provide preparation to do professional civil engineering work.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proven ability to read interpret and apply relevant ordinances municipal codes engineering standards plans and specifications related to improvements within the public right of way.
  • Familiarity with channelization design and key regulatory documents including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) SDOTs Directors Rules and City of Seattle Standard Plans.
  • Strong negotiation mediation and conflict-resolution skills with the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including the ability to present technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel Outlook PowerPoint).
  • Experience using AutoCAD Bluebeam and GIS-based applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities meet strict deadlines and adapt to evolving project needs while keeping supervisors informed of progress and challenges.
  • Highly detail-oriented with excellent organizational time management and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base ensuring equity in transportation decisions and project reviews.

Other Requirements:

  • Completion of a background check may be required for this position.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather traffic hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to work nights evenings weekends and holidays as necessary.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand walk or bend for extended periods of time.

Licenses:

  • Current Washington State drivers license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
