Radiation Dosimetry Engineer

Job Summary:

The Calibration Engineer will work in a large radiation calibration laboratory within the UW School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Medical Physics. The duties of the position are largely technical in nature. The candidate will conceptualize design test and maintain and improve research and clinical ionizing radiation metrology instrumentation to promote and enhance medical metrology research. To support the research program the position must work with lab faculty and graduate students. Currently there are two faculty members 12 staff and 14 graduate students. The position will be a blend of research project development and routine calibrations.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Designs implements and executes research plans for improving clinical ionizing radiation metrology instrumentation

  • Facilitates cooperative research group(s) to improve current and develop new highly sensitive ionizing radiation measurement instrumentation

  • Contributes to the development of radiation dosimetry research through presentations for internal and external audiences

  • Consults with department personnel on proper protocol for maintaining laboratory compliance with accrediting organizations

  • Provides instruction and technical support on newly developed and existing measurement instrumentation in various environments

  • Attends conferences and trade shows and participates in training classes seminars and
    online tutorials to increase knowledge base of the UW-MRRC and provide technical innovation that reflects best use of current industry capabilities

  • Performs radiation dosimetry equipment calibrations

Department:

School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Medical Physics Calibration Laboratory

Medical physics was established as a specialty focus within the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health creating the first and only basic science Department of Medical Physics of its kind in the country. Faculty within the department have a scholarly focus on discoveries and inventions in imaging and therapy systems that lead to scientific translation into clinical trials or to industrial translation to create products through collaboration or via new venture entrepreneurship. Medical physics is led by 30 core faculty with 45 affiliate and 14 emeritus faculty members with many having joint appointments in clinical departments such as Radiology and Human (Radiation) Oncology.

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $72000.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year of experience in ionizing radiation physics

  • Capable of working in an accredited calibration laboratory environment

  • Familiarity with ionizing radiation research with a strong emphasis in radiation measurements

  • Knowledge of photon and electron radiation physics

Education:

Bachelors degree preferred.
