This position will report to the Diagnostic Director and is located in the Diagnostic Center of a multi-level custody male correctional facility. Duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Analyzing and interpreting legal commitments/documents medical data psychological data criminal history social history statistical information gathered from interviews and written documentation and develop effective treatment plans for offenders including recommendations for housing custody treatment and programming.
  2. Comprehending and abiding by policy standard operating procedures emergency plans memoranda legal documents and other directives both written and verbal governing daily activities.
  3. Performing routine supportive counseling and crisis intervention functions to include suicide prevention recognizing abnormal behavior and taking appropriate action in accordance with established procedures.
  4. Performing rescue functions during emergencies (i.e. physically removing people from dangerous areas and securing people from confined areas).
  5. Communicating effectivelywith staff offenders and members of the general public in verbal and written form utilizing existing communication systems to convey and/or obtain information instruction and direction.
  6. Developing effective treatment plans for offenders.
  7. Defending oneself or another against by violent persons utilizing unarmed self-defense baton or other approved self-defense techniques and devises. And also working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become violent and verbally abusive.
  8. Keeping continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area to ensure proper security sanitation and safety practices.
  9. Operatingeffectively and accurately various office machines (i.e. computer typewriters calculators copiers fax machines etc.).
  10. Maintaining a professional demeanor at all times despite mental and verbal abuse by offenders.


Note to Current State Employees:
The salary grade for this position is NC08(Salary Range:$37782 - $66120). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
About Central Prison:
Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.

While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Effective July 1 2025 candidates now must meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the Minimum Education and Experience listed from the OSHR class specification as seen in the next section below. The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) listed here in this section are now to be used as Management Preferencesand to be used to screen for the MOST QUALIFIED pool of applicants.
Management Preferences

  1. Documented knowledge of methods used to evaluate or assess an individual for treatment or program services.
  2. Documented experience with report writing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in a Human Services field from an appropriately accredited institution ANDone year of experience in testing or interviewing and/or counseling; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
