SUMMARY Under direction to plan organize and participate in the school library services; to plan develop organize and maintain the library collection; to assist in the conduct of research and acquisition of books serial publications documents media and other instructional materials; to assist the instructional staff and students in pursuing special curriculum and pilot projects; to plan develop organize and assist in the operation of a comprehensive educational master planning process; and to do other related functions as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This position classification requires subject matter expertise commonly associated with teaching and instruction related to library science. Directly related librarianship and instruction experience is suggested to perform demonstration teaching library use and research in-service training and problem analysis using prescribed principles methods and concepts. The position classification performs decision analysis and makes decisions of considerable consequence in determining how best to aid students and teachers in a library setting. The functional role of this position classification requires the application and interpretation of data facts procedures and policies. The incumbent meets frequently with school administrators teachers and other staff to communicate information data and alternative problem solutions. This is a sedentary position classification that performs light work that involves sitting a portion of the time but does require walking and standing for extended periods. This position requires accurate perceiving of sound near and far vision depth perception handling and working with materials and objects and providing oral information and may require lifting 10 to 20 pounds.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Assist and guide students and the instructional personnel toward improved proficiency in library science technology. Assist instructional personnel in the utilization of adopted courses of study program instruction guidelines books media and computer generated data and information. Instruct pupils in research skills and in the use of library media and equipment to supplement and reinforce classroom instruction. Utilize a variety of creative and innovative methodology in providing assistance to other instructional personnel.
Provide demonstration teaching in specialized instructional areas using modern and updated educational equipment materials books and learning aids. Perform a variety of research in the development of feasibility plans pertaining to special curriculum areas and pilot projects. Participate with school administrators teachers other staff and parents in the selecting and acquiring of library collection additions textbooks equipment and print and non-print instructional materials. Plan organize and coordinate the technical library operational processes including acquisition organization maintenance retrieval and inventory control. Assist instructional personnel in the establishment of standards of student behavior in a library setting. Counsel confer and communicate with instructional personnel parents and others concerning the interpretation of the districts educational programs and in the use of instructional materials and media. Prepare and distribute bibliographies to stimulate student interest and to acquaint the instructional staff with new collection acquisitions. Plan organize and maintain an automated informational management storage and retrieval system and prepare periodic operational and budget reports. Comply with applicable state and federal law as well as local policies and procedures. Others duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Principles theories methods techniques and strategies pertaining to library science and the teaching and instruction of public school pupils; Child growth and development and behavior characteristics of public school students; Educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives and the trends and research findings pertaining to educational programs and instructional strategies; Behavior management and behavior shaping strategies techniques and methods and conflict resolution procedures; Socio-economic and cultural background differences of the community.
Ability to: Plan organize develop and assist in the conduct of a comprehensive library service program and educational planning process; Provide effective in-service experiences for instructional personnel with a wide range of socioeducational backgrounds and experiences; Effectively assess the educational needs of pupils and assist in the design development and implementation of prescriptive educational plans; Perform research and development activities pertaining to modern library science and curriculum and instruction programs.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:
Experience: Five years of successful full-time librarianship service and teaching experience.
Education: Possession of a Baccalaureate or higher degree with emphasis in library science instructional technology and with recent coursework in contemporary library science.
MEDIA SPECIALIST (LIBRARIAN)
