ABOUT THE POSITION

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is seeking experiencedSelf-Help Attorneysto provide legal and procedural assistance to self-represented litigants across a range of complex legal matters ensuring equitable access to justice. They oversee assigned staff and paralegals to maintain consistent service quality at designated court locations. For a detailed job description please click here. Key Responsibilities:

• Supervision and Staff Management Directs and evaluates paralegals interns and staff across multiple county locations including establishing performance goals and monitoring progress.
• Litigation Information and Procedural Guidance Assists self-represented litigants in understanding court procedures.
• Quality Control and Technical ReviewReviews work products of assigned staff and paralegals for technical accuracy.
• Resource Development and Referral Services Enhances access to justice through targeted resource support.
• Policy Implementation and Legal Compliance Ensures alignment with legal mandates court procedures and operational standards and participates in planning and administering departmental policies.
• Outreach Legislative Analysis and Research Maintain detailed case records input data into court databases and prepare formal evaluations and reports for judicial review.

Superior Court of California County of Los Angeles Self-Help Attorneys may only practice law within the scope of their duties as employees of the Court and are prohibited by Court policy from any outside practice of law during the course of their employment. This prohibition includes giving legal advice receiving fees and/or appearing in any court on behalf of another person.

THIS IS A TELEWORK OPPORTUNITY

This position may be eligible for partial telework following an initial training period and contingent upon the needs of the Court.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To qualify you must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application:

OPTION I: Graduation with a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school or equivalent -AND-two (2) years of experience performing legal services for self-represented litigants for a court or non-profit agency as an attorney -AND-a member of the California State Bar in good standing.

OPTION II: Graduation with a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school or equivalent -AND- two (2) years of experience practicing as a family law housing and/or probate attorney -AND- a member of the California State Bar in good standing.

Note:Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio i.e. working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements

Some assignments may require bilingual skills in languages consistent with the demographics of Los Angeles County.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the following desirable qualifications:

• Experience working in court-based self-help.
• Experience working or volunteering with low-income and self-represented litigants.
• Experience working with domestic violence matters.
• Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing in other languages in addition to English.
