JOB SUMMARY:
The Assistant Area Coordinator is a part-time live-in professional staff member of Residence Life and Housing within the Division of Student Affairs. The Assistant Area Coordinator is responsible for an assigned residential area and is expected to assist with all residential areas of campus as appropriate. Reporting to an Area Coordinator responsibilities include student learning development community development administrative tasks supervising and providing leadership to the Resident Assistant staff and carrying out the mission of Columbia College and the Residence Life and Housing program. The Assistant Area Coordinator is required to live in a lightly-furnished college residence hall apartment and serve on the Professional On-Call schedule.
Qualifications
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Learning Development
- Assist the Area Coordinator in advising individual residents on personal academic and social matters.
- Provide support and assistance to individual residents during personal crises relating to their general welfare.
- Utilize college and community resources in referring residents to appropriate offices and programs to enhance their personal growth.
- Coordinate educational bulletin boards for their building.
Community Development
- Build a sense of identity and belonging in the building by holding regular community meetings visiting residents and keeping residents informed of campus news and resources.
- Be visible and accessible to residents of the building during the week and weekends.
- Involve residents in activities in the hall and greater residential community.
- Maintain bulletin boards and door decorations.
- Work cooperatively with Area Coordinators the Director Resident Assistants and other student leaders.
- Confront incidents and policy violations in all residence halls and complete incident reports.
- Assist with advising and attending scheduled meetings and activities of the Residence Hall Association. Assist with annual and new programs.
- Under direction of the Area Coordinator provide activities based on the Residence Life programming model and the 4 Cs of Leadership.
- Notify leadership of all matters affecting student life particularly unresolved problems or situations affecting the welfare of students. Communicate needs interests and concerns of residents to the Area Coordinator.
Administrative
- Attend weekly staff meetings with the Area Coordinator and Director of Residence Life.
- Attend on-going in-service training sessions and August/January training sessions.
- Attend scheduled one-on-one meetings with Area Coordinator.
- Submit and follow-up on work orders for the residential area.
- Provide timely and accurate documentation concerning confrontations and policy violations.
- Perform administrative duties as deemed necessary by the Area Coordinator or Director of Residence Life and Housing (e.g. room inventories distribution of memos incident reports check out/in procedures).
- Serve on the Professional On-Call duty rotation schedule.
- Communicate effectively with personnel from other departments.
- Conduct Health & Safety inspections in assigned residential area.
- Assist with the room selection and staff recruitment and selection processes.
- Remain accessible in the building during on-call nights except when doing rounds or handling emergencies.
- Respond to lockouts and emergencies; provide desk coverage if necessary.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be able to deal with residents in a confidential and professional manner.
- Must have strong interpersonal skills compassion for others and ability to organize and work with student groups.
- Must know support implement and abide by college policies and procedures.
- Must maintain a high level of accessibility and availability for residents and other staff members.
- Outside employment must be approved by the Director.
