Duties & Responsibilities:

(**denotes essential functions):

  1. **Design and coordinate summer institutes and field schools including planning recruitment logistics and student support.
  2. **Design and coordinate peer mentorship program for Maui to Manoa bridge activities including teacher preparation in both English and Hawaiian programs.
  3. **Plan and coordinate student workshops for the Maui to Manoa bridge activities in both English and Hawaiian.
  4. **Design and coordinateUniversity of Hawaii Maui College (UHMC) education pathways activities including high school bridge substitute teacher training and teacher professional development.
  5. **Develop and coordinate student internship opportunities in both English and Hawaiian.
  1. **Design and implement two to four-year pathways for students in teacher education programs.
  1. **Compile and manage program data.
  2. **Supervision of Student Peer Tutors
    1. Responsible for the entire hiring process of peer tutors including but not limited to developing job descriptions posting/advertising interviewing evaluating and overall communication with applicants and administration.
    2. Coordinates scheduling work hours and oversees work training and professional development activities for student peer tutors.
    3. Schedules and coordinates training for student peer tutors using the resources of the UHMC in customer service that includes dealing with difficult/disruptive behavior tutoring mentoring and compliance (e.g. FERPATitle IX EEO).
    4. Supervises and guides the student peer tutors as needed.
    5. Provides technical training on the basic use of a Personal computer and Macintosh Computers (PC & MAC) and the use of various software programs that are available to students.
    6. Designs and implements peer tutoring programs that support UHMC faculty and overall student success and monitors said programs to provide suggestions to better achieve the goals of this program.
  3. **Coordinate Student Resource Centers &Labs
    1. Assist with arranging and coordinating activities and services offered through student support services
  4. **Coordinate UHMC Campus Collaborations & Connections (including Maui Community)
    1. Identifies student and faculty needs and develops and implements support services that support students.
    2. Collaborates with available campus resources and the community to increase academic success to provide wrap-around services to Native Hawaiian (NH)students.
    3. Workswith faculty and staff to recommend and/or establish student success strategies and services.
  5. **Reporting
    1. Tracks evaluates and assesses lab usage peer tutoring and all other lab services that support persistence retention and success.
    2. Collects organizes compiles and manages data and submits reports on lab services.
    3. Attends weekly meetings with the larger team to inform them of general plans progress of student peer tutors and resource center and develop ongoing programs and initiatives.
    4. Prepares other reports as needed.
  6. **Engage in research and participate in professional development related to student and instructional support services and student success.
  7. Applies new knowledge and skills to improve the overall performance and functions of the support center and student peer tutors.
  8. **Address problems of a complex nature using independent judgment and creativity.
  9. **Approach all duties and responsibilities listed above to meet grant goals and objectives.
    1. Activity 1: Improve and expand applied multi-disciplinary research and networking opportunities for Native Hawaiian (NH) students faculty and staff (and community) at the UHMC.
      1. Increase learning and professional development opportunities for NH students faculty and staff(1.2)
      2. Increase opportunities for networking among NH students facultystaff and community (1.3)
    2. Activity 2: Improve and expand Native Hawaiian academic access between the UHMC and the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Professional Work Experience

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Hawaiian Studies Language OR Education or a related field ANDtwo (2) years of progressively responsible experience with responsibilities for Student Support Activities including Counseling Advising Workshop ServiceOR Program Development; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  1. Functional knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of Student Support Services as demonstrated by knowledge understanding and ability to apply concepts terminology.
  2. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles theories federal and state laws rules regulations and systems associated with Student Support Services.
  3. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems identify possible causes and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in the area of Student Support Services.
  4. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  5. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team members and individuals.
  6. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Oral and written fluency in the Hawaiian language at the level required to facilitate training classes and workshops for Hawaiian language immersion teacher candidates and schools.
Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Experience working in bilingual (English and Hawaiian) college-level student support services and Native Hawaiian Programming.
