The Role
We are looking for a Director of Engineering who is passionate about making GeminiModels win the hearts and minds of developers. This role is motivated by the criticalcapabilities we can build on top of Gemini models and externalize to the world. Youwill operate with significant autonomy leading a team to drive technical directionand execution for key areas of the Gemini API and serving infrastructure.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead mentor and grow a team of Software Engineers fostering ahigh-performance culture promoting technical excellence and ensuring careerdevelopment for your direct reports.
- Define and drive the technical strategy and roadmap for highly scalableand robust Gemini API features and infrastructure used to externalize GeminiModels and their tooling ecosystem to external developers.
- Oversee and guide the scaling of the Gemini Model serving stack tohandle billions of requests per day and support millions of developers ensuringthe team identifies and resolves complex performance bottlenecks.
- Provide architectural oversight and strategic direction for significantcomponents within the entire lifecycle of the Model serving stack fromresearch and internal testing to externalization via API and AI Studio.
- Contribute to hands-on development as needed especially for critical pathitems complex architectural decisions or to unblock the team while primarily
focusing on managerial responsibilities. - Drive the productionization of new generative AI technical stacksensuring the team delivers robust production-scale features.
- Collaborate strategically with partner Product Areas/teams at a seniorlevel to advance LLM state-of-the-art techniques and realize significantreal-world product impact.
- Own the operationalization strategy for Gemini models fromresearch/internal testing to external developers in production setting thestandards for reliability and scalability.
- Innovate and implement solutions to build a production environment that canreliably scale to billions of requests ensuring high availability and low latency.
- Manage project priorities deadlines and deliverables effectively allocatingresources and mitigating risks.
About You
In order to set you up for success as a Software Engineering Manager at GoogleDeepMind we look for the following skills and experience:
- Masters degree in Computer Science or a related technical field or equivalent practical experience.
- 15 years of experience in software development including significantexperience in a technical leadership or management role leadinghigh-performing engineering teams.
- Proven experience managing mentoring and developing a team ofsoftware engineers including performance management career growth andfostering a collaborative team environment.
- Expert-level proficiency in software architecture distributed systemsdesign and scalable infrastructure.
- Proven track record of leading complex technical projects from conceptionto launch demonstrating significant impact.
- Demonstrated ability to drive inter-team and cross-functional collaborationat a senior leadership level.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills with a proven track record of innovativeideas and excellent execution in challenging technical domains.
- Deep understanding of code collaboration best practices and experiencewith large-scale monorepos.
In addition the following would be an advantage:
- Extensive experience with Generative AI models and applications eitherthrough direct development or strategic oversight.
- Experience with Full-Stack Development particularly in environments thatinteract with complex backend AI services.
- Proficiency in one or more general-purpose programming languages (e.g. GoPython C Kotlin) relevant to large-scale systems.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $294000 - $414000 bonus benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
