The National is looking for an enthusiastic creative and experienced Associate Producer to join our cross-platform content team for one year.
Reporting to the Executive Producer the AP will be involved in shaping and producing video content including researching chasing and booking guests writing and working with an editor to create video content for TV and digital platforms. You will work with our award-winning journalists on a variety of assignments often juggling a number of projects at the same time. You will be expected to train and work in a number of different AP roles across the newsroom.
You should have experience bringing creative thinking to video production - for television and/or digital audiences. Youre a team player who can make quick decisions in a deadline-driven daily news environment. You are passionate about the news and issues that are top of mind for our audience - including stories that connect with underrepresented communities. You are innovative flexible and a self starter - and have experience working with field production and editing teams.
Experience in social and investigative journalism are definite assets. This role will require working evenings and weekends as well as occasional overtime.
Key Tasks:
Contribute ideas for program content with an eye to achieving team objectives
Assist in developing content including writing researching and/or production resources required by the program on behalf of producers
Write scripts and guest greens ensuring adherence to the style and format of the program
Work closely with producers reporters editors graphic artists and videographers to develop and execute content in our signature formats
Organize the participation of interviewees creative contributors and other participants develop background introduction and line of questioning conduct or arrange for any necessary research and ensure the briefing of hosts
Produce shoots in the field or work with editors as required at the direction of the producer
Participate in the evaluation of all aspects of the production
Assist in developing content including writing researching and/or editing
Write content for broadcast or digital publication
Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the program unit
You possess:
A university degree or equivalent as well as at least two years of relevant experience in journalism and video production
Excellent grasp of news stories - both domestically and internationally - and how they are treated and gathered
Curiosity about news and current events including coverage of underrepresented communities
Strong news judgment under very tight deadline conditions
Understanding of the changing video landscape and how content meets audience demands on different platforms
Demonstrated ability to:
identity pitch and develop stories that deepen audience understanding of the news
write clean copy for broadcast or digital
chase and book guests
direct teams in the field
identify and locate relevant visuals
maintain a wide number of relevant sources
juggle multiple assignments at the same time
work flexible hours and overtime as required including evenings and weekends
speak and write fluently in English (French is an asset)
work with teams constructively and collaboratively
Must be comfortable and willing to train in a number of different job functions as determined by the Executive Producer.
Ability to work for extended periods of time under the pressure of breaking and sometimes highly technical news and still maintain a cooperative relationship with colleagues.
