Reporting to the Finance Manager you will utilize your professional accounting designation and leadership skills in fulfilling the role of financial leadership for a diversified business operation.
What will you do
Provide financial analytics strategic support and consultative services to Financial & Corporate Services department facilitating a culture of strong financial governance and stewardship over primarily operating budget
Work with management teams to facilitate forecast and budget preparation
Actively partner with various teams across the organization to assist with ad-hoc reporting analysis and decision support as required
Preparing variance analysis on financial results including comparisons to budget projections and historical trends
Provide financial analytics advice and assistance to decision makers and assess documents to ensure that long term business commitments are adhered to
Prepare monthly quarterly and annual financial reporting for departmental operating expenditures
Provide and input budget information into the Capital Operating Budget System
Provide financial support and financial data input relating to Financial & Corporate Services business cases for council and committee reports
Provide financial analytics expertise for business cases and reports to assist management in the formulation and implementation of the organizations strategy
Consult with department managers to determine financial and accounting requirements and develop necessary financial systems and models to measure results
Continuously improve processes and procedures to meet needs of internal clients alongside organizational and technology changes
Additional related duties as required
Qualifications:
A degree from a recognized post-secondary institute in accounting business commerce or management
A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible related accounting experience preferably within a public sector environment and in roles performing financial analytics
Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA formerly CA CMA CGA) designation or internationally recognized equivalent
Candidates with less than the required experience and/or education requirements may be considered at an opportunity concept level
Opportunity Concept level:
University Degree (bachelor or applied) in accounting-related discipline working towards a recognized accounting designation (e.g. either eligible or accepted into CPA program) and one (1) year of progressively responsible full cycle (month-end and year-end accounting budgeting and variance analysis) accounting experience OR recognized Canadian accounting designation (CPA/CA/CMA/CGA) without the requisite year of experience
Incumbents must obtain Job Level qualifications within five (5) years from position start date
Incumbents will be required to sign off on Terms and Conditions along with the union as per the Collective Agreement
Assets:
Experience working with operating financial planning and budgeting
Skills required for success:
Significant knowledge and experience with Google Sheets Excel SAP COBS and other related systems
Thorough understanding of general accounting activities (i.e. budgeting forecasting financial analysis)
Thorough knowledge of corporate and departmental policy & procedures
Thorough knowledge of the corporate financial system and its inter-relationship to departmental accounting operations
Significant experience and proficiency in major financial and analytical software systems
High level of analytical and conceptual skills to identify and resolve complex financial problems
Compliance with corporate and departmental policies and procedures generally accepted accounting principles and CICA Handbook recommendations and Public Accounting Standards recommendations.
Must have a good working knowledge of most City functions and the type of work each department provides
Strong problem solving skills and effective communication are expected to resolve operational and business issues
Excellent customer service while ensuring adherence to professional standards
Ability to effectively communicate and maintain a working relationship with all levels of management and non-management personnel

Work Environment:
Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
