Job Description

The Des Moines Civil Service Commission is establishing a new Eligibility List for Police Sergeant. Applicants must pass a Sergeant Promotional Exam hosted by Public Service Testing be currently employed as a City of Des Moines Police Officer and meet the minimum requirements at the time of testing.


SERGEANT PROMOTIONAL EXAM: October 27 28 and 29 2025


INTERVIEW AVAILABILITY: In-person interviews will be scheduled on the dates listed above. Candidates should plan to be available on all listed dates. While these dates are confirmed depending on the number of eligible applicants one or more of the dates may not be used.

SALARY RANGE (2024 Police Guild):

  • S1: $141153/yr.
  • S2: $149529/yr.

REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma or GED certificate and one of the following:

  • Associate of Arts degree in law enforcement criminal justice or a related field from an accredited college; or
  • Proof of completion of (60) semester hours or (90) quarter hours from an accredited college or university; and
  • At least three (3) years of employment as a commissioned police officer and off probation as a current City of Des Moines police officer.
  • Must be currently certified by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission or be currently certified in a law enforcement program for which recognition and certification is or can be granted or is accredited by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
  • A combination of experience and training enabling the individual to perform the positions essential functions may be considered.
