Purpose of the Position

Performing the clinical duties of a staff specialist in palliative care including delivery of inpatient clinical palliative care services for adolescent and young adult patients with implementation of and participation in palliative medicine education and research. The position is part of the Palliative Care Network. Ongoing quality assurance activities at the Departmental Divisional and District levels and additionally as directed by the Director of Medical Services and Director of Clinical Governance.

The Manly Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice (AYAH) provides specialised and designated support to Adolescents and Young Adults between the ages of 16-30 years old with life limiting illnesses. For adolescents and young adults in the age group 16-30 years this includes those who were either born with or acquired their condition during childhood and survived to adolescence as well as those who have acquired a condition later in life. It is the first facility of its type in Australia.

The AYAH provides a unique Model of Care and Service Model that has not previously been delivered to this cohort of patients whilst aligning to the principles and goals of the End of Life and Palliative Care and Youth Health Frameworks. The Manly AYAH is a centre of excellence for palliative care and supportive care and seeks to provide exceptional experience to patients carers family and friends of patients.

The aim of the service model is to assist in the delivery of best practice care and services for adolescents and young adult patients with life limiting illnesses as they progress through their healthcare journey. We aim to ensure they receive seamlessly coordinated culturally appropriate care by compassionate skilled staff. Additionally the AYAH provides person- centred high quality care within a setting specifically designed for adolescents and young adults. This includes holistic care and support to young people and their families comprising a range of individualised services includingsocial events supportive care and counselling and bereavement support.

This care will be provided within the scope of practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC)

This position is temporary with the possibility of temporary extension based on performance funding and need

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent currently registered or eligible for registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Australian Chapter of Palliative Medicine (FRACP) or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration Openness Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues direct reports as well as our patients and consumers and those that care for them.
  3. Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience.
  4. Experience to practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner in Palliative Medicine and clinical experience in managing adolescent and young adult patients.
  5. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to lead and work within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  7. Demonstrated interest in quality improvement methodologies.
  8. A valid Drivers licence.
