The ITS Operations Engineer works in a state-of-the-art Traffic Management Center (TMC) to improve traffic flow by using cutting-edge Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). In this role high importance is placed on using todays traffic signal technology ITS Automated Traffic Signal Performance Metrics (ATSPM) and other data to predict traffic conditions and keep traffic moving efficiently.

We Require
Two years of professional pre-registration experience in civil traffic or transportation engineering. Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) may substitute for the required experience
Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona drivers license by the time of hire

Self-motivated with the capability to monitor several traffic management systems
Ability to infer meaningful information from raw data or statistics
Knowledge and experience in reviewing engineering plans and troubleshooting field issues pertaining to traffic signals
Experience in writing technical reports
Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Signal Timing Manual
Knowledge of using Synchro for creating traffic signal coordination plans Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM) for analyzing traffic signal performance and Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) for real-time traffic signal operations
Advanced experience using Microsoft Office and Cartegraph
Knowledge of the fundamentals of civil engineering traffic engineering mathematics and physics as applied to engineering
Knowledge of Federal State and County policies procedures codes and ordinances related to traffic engineering
Intermediate knowledge using MicroStation
Job Contributions
Operate the ATMS and other traffic signal systems; develop and implement traffic signal timing plans and coordination plans per industry best practices and County guidelines and standards
Apply engineering knowledge by providing project field engineering to resolve conflicts and troubleshoot issues during the construction phase of projects; approve all field adjustments and equipment modifications on traffic signals
Apply engineering knowledge by reviewing traffic signal-related design plan submittals providing guidance/direction to the Design Team and developing cost estimates for traffic signal infrastructure; conduct field engineering to ensure compliance with County standards and practices
Analyze traffic signal and traffic congestion concerns using Synchro performance metric systems and travel time software; make logical recommendations based on findings
Represent the MCDOT TSMO Division at various meetings with other government agencies and the public. Support the inter-jurisdictional traffic signal maintenance program. Support Traveler Information from the TMC
Perform other related duties as assigned
Working Conditions
Exerting 20 - 25 occasionally 10 - 25 frequently or up to 10 pounds constantly
Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures wetness/humidity respiratory hazards and noise and vibration
