THE STARTING SALARY FOR THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $40000 - $52530.Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidates education and experience related to the position as well as our agency budget and equity.


The primary purpose of this chemistry technician (technician) position is to provide technical support to the forensic scientists in the Drug Chemistry and Toxicology Units of the Triad Regional Laboratory.


Toxicology & Drug Chemistry Unit Duties:

The technician will be directly responsible for maintaining the laboratory equipment and instrumentation performing repairs and upkeep doing daily tunes and calibration checks and keeping logs for multiple instrument systems. The technician will assist the Toxicology unit with the analysis of blood alcohol evidence and the screening of blood drug evidence.


Evidence Processing Duties:

The technician will be responsible for pre-analysis preparation of blood tubes as they are received by the laboratory. The technician will take kits from the Evidence Control section and prepare them for batch analysis by the Forensic Scientists in the Toxicology Unit. When the analysis has been completed it will be the responsibility of the technician to gather and disseminate the blood tubes to ECU and reports to the proper agencies.


General and Administrative Duties:

The technician is responsible for the following duties throughout the laboratory including but not limited to:

  • Preparing chemical reagents and solvents and keeping logs referencing these.
  • Washing glassware and cleaning laboratories.
  • Cataloging and maintain a constant supply of specialty gases used by each instrumental system in the laboratory.
  • Maintaining all critical and general scientific chemicals and supplies including compiling orders and keeping track of quantities used.
  • Pipette maintenance and verification.
  • Serve as the backup Safety & Chemical Hygiene Officer to ensure that the section is in compliance with laboratory safety procedures.


The technician conducts consultations and participates in pretrial conferences with prosecutors and defense attorneys and testifies in both state and federal court in a professional unbiased manner while conveying a clear knowledge of the subject matter and specific details of the case. This technician must testify in court as to his/her part of any analysis of the evidence.


Some travel including some overnight stays are required.


The selected candidate will undergo and must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation which may take several months to complete. The background investigation includes:

  • polygraph
  • credit and arrest checks
  • interviews with associates to include personal and business references past employers and neighbors
  • verification of education achievement
  • fingerprinting
  • urinalysis drug screening


Out of state applicants: After the initial interview this may require the applicant to return to the State of North Carolina multiple times at his or her own expense to undergo the background investigation process.

The salary grade for this position is NC07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. Division Information:

TheState Crime Laboratory of the Department of Justice maintains a full-service forensic science laboratory to assist all law enforcement agencies in North Carolina in the investigation of criminal matters. The Laboratorys mission is to provide state-of-the-art forensic services in the areas of drug analysis blood alcohol/drug content firearms latent prints footwear and tire tracks forensic biology computer forensics and trace evidence. The services are provided from a central laboratory in Raleigh N.C. and regional laboratories located in Edneyville N.C. and Greensboro N.C.


The primary purpose of the Greensboro (Triad) Regional Laboratory is to provide forensic laboratory analyses technical field assistance and expert witness testimony in the areas of controlled substances blood alcohol blood drug drug dilution drug tampering and clandestine drug laboratories and latent evidence.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management preference:

Direct laboratory experience with pipettes balances and GC-MS.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in one of the chemical biological microbiological environmental or natural resource sciences including related chemistry laboratory coursework from an appropriately accredited institution;
OR
Associates degree in one of the chemical biological microbiological environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum including related chemistry laboratory coursework from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related chemistry laboratory experience;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience.
