In this role you will supervise the Inmate Classification Specialists to ensure that inmates are classified into the appropriate custody level and housing type. This role oversees prioritization of classifications to maintain compliance with all court mandates.

Position Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelors Degree in Social Work Criminal Justice Sociology Psychology or another closely related field.

Experience

  • Two (2) years of professional-level social work experience.

OR

Combined education and experience qualifications

  • Postgraduate degrees or professional-level related experience may substitute for the education or experience on a year-for-year basis.

Other requirements

  • Training that may be provided on-the-job: FEMA NIMS IS100 and 700; Safety; Payroll; PREA.
  • Arizona drivers license upon hire.
  • Prior to hiring the Sheriffs Office requires that all candidates pass a background review.

Our Preferred Candidate has

  • Three (3) years of professional level social work experience in criminal justice or behavioral science.
  • Two (2) years of experience as Inmate Classification Specialist with the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office.
  • Prior lead and/or supervisory experience.
  • Open availability and is able to work any shift.

Essential Job Tasks

(This is not an all-inclusive list of all job duties that may be required; employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.)

  • Supervises Inmate Classification Specialists and ensures that all activities involving classification operations are performed effectively efficiently and in conformance to Office Policy and any applicable Federal State or Local laws.
  • Evaluates procedures encourages innovative ideas and recommends improvements.
  • Advises personnel of new directives policies procedures and goals.
  • Communicates a clear vision of team goals values and objectives.
  • Ensures that everyone understands each others roles responsibilities how they relate to department objectives and monitors progress toward achieving objectives.
  • Prepares Employee Performance Appraisals and maintains employee performance records.
  • Counsels and coaches assigned personnel.
  • Initiates performance planning with employees as necessary and follows through by evaluating employee progress.
  • Provides direction guidance and support to employee training development and quality control.
  • Prepares work schedules and daily work assignment rosters to ensure sufficient coverage for all mandatory duty positions.
  • Monitors daily workload and prioritize classifications to ensure compliance within court mandated time frames.
  • Conducts Critical Policy Briefings and inspections as required by MCSO Policy.
  • Attends department meetings with command staff leads and other personnel.
  • Compiles and reviews statistical information and prepare reports.
  • Acts as liaison between MCSO departments and outside agencies.
  • Represents the Classification Division in depositions or court proceedings and corresponds with attorneys and other law enforcement agencies as necessary.
  • Processes subordinates bi-weekly payroll timekeeping records in a timely manner and in accordance with MCSO Policy.
  • Interviews and selects prospective employees for hire or promotion.
  • Performs duties of Classification Specialist during periods of heavy workload to process classification requests in a timely manner.
  • Performs duties as the Inmate Classification Operations/Program Supervisor in their absence.
  • Notifies the Inmate Classification Manager or Inmate Classification Operations/Program Supervisor of any problems that may arise.
  • Remains present at work site to perform any/all assigned duties scheduled/assigned by the Inmate Classification Manager or Inmate Classification Operations/Program Supervisor.
  • Models good attendance to perform tasks as scheduled/assigned by the Inmate Classification Manager or Inmate Classification Operations/Program Supervisor.

Work occurs indoors within the secure confines of a jail facility. Tasks required accuracy decision making and teamwork. Position may involve communicating directly with the inmate population.

  • Communicate successfully in oral and written format as appropriate for the audience.
  • Prioritize team workloads and tasks in busy work environment.
