Job Summary

To fully address and support the holistic wellbeing of our scholars The School District of University (SDUC) has embraced the concepts of becoming a trauma-informed organization. Prioritizing social and emotional learning (SEL) committing to restorative practices collaborating with external supports to meet the needs of students and engaging in innovative programming that may include mental health strategies for whole student wellbeing. We are looking for a highly relational motivated and passionate team member with a deep understanding of the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools to focus on the overall wellbeing for ALL of our amazing scholars.

Rationale

The Well Being Specialist position will support the districts processes and systematic changes to address disproportionality. The School District of University City has been identified by the department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) as being disproportionate as it relates to out of school suspensions. The target percentage is <3.25%. The Well Being Specialist will provide proactive and solution driven tier II (supplemental) and tier III (intensive) support to students not identified as receiving special education services. This position will support the academic and social emotional growth for all students.

Essential Function of the Position and Responsibilities:

Perform trauma informed/social emotional learning (TI/SEL) with individual students and groups to provide interventions for social emotional support in areas related to their educational and social progress.

Coordinate or serve as an active participant of building level support teams and educational planning committees to provide intervention-based support for students.

Consult and collaborate with essential school staff in gathering student information to establish plans to support next steps to address student behavior.

Collaborate with essential school staff to serve as a resource to parents to help bridge understanding of student social emotional learning needs and resources available for support.

Support school staff when making home visits for the purpose of fostering positive home/school relationships and gathering information on students background to help establish support for social emotional learning and school supports as needed.

Provide social emotional learning opportunities for students in buildings to support students with practicing and generalizing skills across all learning spaces.

Teach and engage with students individually and in small groups to discuss and model SEL practices that support student success.

Facilitate all areas of restorative practices including restorative circles for the purpose of building community repairing harm restoring relationships and re-entry into the school community.

Provide trauma informed/social emotional learning and crisis intervention supports to scholars.

Support scholars to generalize evidenced-based strategies in the school spaces to foster school overall success.

Plan and implement professional development and modeling for faculty staff students and community members on topics related to social emotional learning (SEL) trauma-informed practices restorative practices and wellness.

Utilize district data-based systems to interpret and share survey results to identify track and analyze school data trends related to the effectiveness of SEL/TI/RP that monitor students in need of additional support.

Collaborate with essential staff to discuss short and long-term effectiveness of implemented practices.

Collaborate with support team partners build agency relationships and evaluate partnership impact on behalf of the school students and/or families.

Support building administrators and actively participate on building-level leadership teams.

Other duties as assigned by the district.

Qualifications:

  • Education and experience in social work school counseling or K-12 education
  • Masters degree preferred
  • Completed graduate level work in the areas of counseling social work or social services
  • Experience and training in social and emotional learning trauma-informed and restorative practices preferred
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from stakeholder groups
  • Experience with developing adult learners through professional learning
  • Ability to identify problems collect and analyze data decipher facts and draw valid conclusions to support SEL and applied strategies to support student learning.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on data and school-based team outcomes as well as the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of students peers parents and community.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and layout work in a well-planned and organized manner.
  • The capacity to be aware of control and express ones emotions and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and sympathetically.
