Position Purpose summary:
The purpose of the expectation task list is to identify and clarify what management expects from the incumbent. The following expectations and tasks will be part of the annual performance appraisals your merit increase will be based on the level of performance in each of the following areas.
Expectations may change year to year and both parties should use the annual performance appraisal to determine realistic and equitable goals and outcomes for the upcoming performance year.
The position of Residential Supervisor is an entry-level management position which assists the Assistant Director in managing front-line day-to-day operations of Islington Seniors Shelter.
SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Supervise and provide day-to-day direction to the Residential Workers in accordance with established policies and procedures including Collective Agreement Employment Standards and payroll procedures.
- Schedule conduct and document supervision.
- Conduct Performance Reviews and Evaluations.
- Attend and actively participate in Critical Time Intervention (CTI) meetings and Chair Team meetings.
- Provide back-up support to Residential and management positions and their functions as required.
- Complete shift schedules in accordance with current policies and Collective Agreement.
2. Assist with the day- to- day operation of the Hostel.
- Ensure residents receive proper Customer Service while relating to the Islington Seniors Shelter Shelter staff.
- Read daily the logs and make necessary follow-up.
- Assist with monitoring the Service Restrictions imposed on residents.
- Chair monthly Residents Meetings as required.
assist the Assistant Director with the administration of the Hostel.
- Gather and submit for entry SAMIS applicable to Residential Workers on a monthly basis.
- Compile and submit the monthly reports service restrictions to the Assistant Director.
- To give direction and ensure SMIS entries are completed properly.
- Assist the Assistant Director in ensuring the Hostel is in compliance and meeting the standards for the Quality Assurance and Accreditation.
- Attend Committee and Agency meetings as directed by the Director.
- Participate in the Policy Review Committee.
- Conduct tours of building for groups or individuals as requested.
- On call duties for Residential issues as scheduled.
assist the Assistant Director with the Finances of the Hostel
- Prepare and submit to the Assistant Director the Residential staff hours of work bi-weekly for payroll submission.
assist the Assistant Director with the Human Resources of the Hostel
- Ensure up to date Residential Worker staff contact information is forwarded to the Assistant Director.
- Monitor and maintain the Residential Worker relief pool.
- Assist with the orientation of new staff.
- Assist with the interview process when requested.
- Monitor and notify Assistant Director of staff training needs (ie. Renewals etc.) in accordance to Hostel policy.
- Keep an updated record of all sick days vacations days lieu and stat days taken by each staff.
- Assist with staff training in accordance with Hostel policy as requested.
assist the Assistant Director to ensure that all Health and Safety requirements specific to the Hostel are in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- To perform workplace inspections.
- To conduct information sessions (safety talks staff meetings).
- To assist with incident investigations.
- To assist with employee health and safety training.
- To assist make recommendations and/or correct substandard acts or conditions.
- To assist in commending employee health and safety performance.
- To perform employee safety observations.
- To ensure compliance with specific Hostel requirements within sections 25 & 26 of the OHSA.
7. Organizational Responsibilities
- Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values and philosophy of The Salvation Army.
- Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and in-service training.
- Engage in formal supervision and performance evaluations.
- Read and follow the policy and procedures manual the Employee Handbook and the Toronto Shelter Standards and understand that the Residential Supervisors position will be required to adhere to all these guidelines in dealing with clients staff and the public.
- Become familiar with the job descriptions and task lists for each position that reports to the Residential Supervisor.
- Make suggestions to the Management team that will improve efficiency working conditions and/or procedures.
- Represent the Organization in a professional manner
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and Toronto Housing and Homeless Support
- Participate fully and constructively in all Staff and Departmental meetings
- Engage in formal performance appraisals with Supervisor after the first 3 months of employment and annually thereafter
- Read and follow the Policy and Procedures Manual. Every employee must read (and sign that they have read) a copy of Hostel Standards & Guidelines (November 2002) and understand that they will be required to adhere to all guidelines in their dealings with Clients as well as with Staff and Administration
- Become familiar with the provisions of the Position Description & Operations Manual which will be provided for each Job Position
- As required and is applicable make suggestions that will improve efficiency working conditions or procedures to management
- Participate in authorized seminars and training sessions as requested
- Represent the Organization in a professional manner
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal:
- Oversee Residential Workers
- Works as part of the Management Team
- Works alongside the Support Services Supervisor
External:
- External shelter Referral agencies
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position reports directly to the Assistant Director
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Working environment is in the shelter locations in generally agreeable conditions.
- The hours of work are: 40 hours for full time and requires on call responsibilities and flexibility for evenings and weekend shifts as needed
- Work outside their scheduled hours or to work past their time due to emergencies or a change in shelter operations
- There may be frequent interruptions and multi-tasking required
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED
- This job is not overly physical in nature; however you may be required to provide First Aid CPR and administration of Naloxone
CONCENTRATION REQUIRED
- The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention to respond to any emergencies the Residential Workers require support for
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The incumbents work environment is typically in the entire facility and surrounding property designated.
The Incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- May interact with clients with erratic/aggressive behaviours
- May deal with angry and/or abusive people
- May deal with verbal abuse
- Odours
- May deal with bodily fluids
- May encounter sharps safe drug supplies
- May deal with onsite pest infestations (bed bugs etc)
EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS
The incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illness due to:
- Physical attacks by others
- Exposure to infectious diseases
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Moving Objects
- Sharp Objects (i.e. needle pricks)
- Electrical Hazards
- Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. back wrist)
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
- Universal precautions
- Use gloves
- Use ear/eye protection
- Eye wash stations
- Fume masks where appropriate
- Appropriate face mask (either medical or N95 and would be based on IPAC protocols)
HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
- Adhere to the agencys Health and Safety Program
- Report accidents/injuries/workplace hazards in a timely manner
- Conduct facility security/safety rounds on a regular basis according to policy
- Adhere to all Health and Safety Policies of the agency

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Social Services Worker Diploma or minimum of 5 years in a work-related field including experience in a residential setting
- 1 -2 years Supervisory Experience
- Thorough knowledge of Toronto Shelter Standards
- Good interpersonal skills
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Second language an asset
- Certification in First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
- Computer Skills
- Ability to work within the mandate of the Mission of The Salvation Army in a professional manner exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.
- Vulnerable Sector Screening clearance
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID 19
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $23.28 to $29.10 with a maximum of $34.92.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
