Job Description Summary
The Instructional Aide supports instructional staff and students by assisting with safety procedures equipment set-up repairs and maintenance of equipment owned leased or rented by FVTC. This position prepares and assists in classroom and lab activities related to the Fire Protection Program which includes some overlap with EMS classes.
Responsibilities include maintaining all heavy-duty vehicles and related equipment owned or leased by FVTC or provided through Public Safety Training Center partnerships. The role also manages logistics for training equipment facilities and mobile training units to ensure safe operations and compliance with industry standards.
The Instructional Aide ensures proper maintenance inspection testing and safe use of Fire and EMS equipment including (but not limited to) the burn building gas fields and props flashover simulator fire apparatus SCBA ladders pumps emergency vehicles and other training resources related to ARFF Fire and EMS programs.
Job Description
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Assist instructional staff in maintaining a safe and effective learning environment.
- Support instructors and students with lab activities in the Fire Protection Program.
- Prepare and assist with equipment and lab activities related to instruction.
- Provide assistance to students instructors and other employees as appropriate.
- Maintain and update records for all equipment within the programs as well as related college-owned equipment.
- Establish and follow preventive maintenance schedules for equipment requiring special attention.
- Maintain records of annual safety inspections on program and college-related equipment in accordance with industry college and governmental standards.
- Recommend and order parts and supplies related to instructional needs and equipment maintenance.
- Assist instructors in managing consumable inventory (e.g. replacement parts tools lab supplies) for daily instructional and equipment needs.
Non-Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- As backup and when requested relating to equipment needs prepares recommendations develops bid specifications and assists instructional staff and supervisor on the budgeting process of major and minor equipment.
- Coordinate inventory repair and maintenance of instructional and employer-owned equipment and tools.
- Responsible for securing building and program-related equipment.
- Assist the instructor or participate in recruiting students.
- Assist with related high school promotional and contest activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
- Technical Diploma
- 4-5 years recent related work experience
Licenses Certifications and Other Requirements:
- Requires a valid Wisconsin drivers license and an acceptable driving record and motor vehicle record check
- Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B
- Certified in Wisconsin as Fire Officer Level 1 Firefighter Level 2 Driver-Operator Pumper and Aerial and Hazardous Materials Operations
- Wisconsin Emergency Services Instructor 1 certification (Wisconsin Emergency Services Instructor 2 preferred)

Work Environment
- Work is typically performed in person.
- Work Location: Primarily in-person at Fox Valley Technical College - PSTC.
- Classroom & Training Grounds: Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions including daytime and nighttime hours.
- Training Conditions: Work may involve high-traffic areas during live training exercises and the use of live fire equipment burn buildings drafting ponds gas fields flashover simulator gas props ARFF props trenches confined space equipment ladders and emergency vehicles.
- Flexibility: The work environment may change based on college needs.

Physical Requirements
- Sitting: This role requires extended periods of sitting while performing tasks and utilizing computer systems.
- Mobility: While much of the work is desk-based occasional mobility may be necessary for attending meetings office tours or events within the workplace.
- Climbing: Capability to climb stairs or ladders.
- Fine Motor Skills: This role may need precise hand movements or manual dexterity for activities such as writing on a whiteboard demonstrating experiments or using instructional technology like computers.
- Repetitive Motions: Capacity to perform repetitive motions such as typing without discomfort or injury.
- Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills are essential for interacting with employees candidates and stakeholders both in-person and through electronic means.
- Travel: Instructor position may require off-site teaching fieldwork or travel for professional development.
- Driving: Valid drivers license and ability to operate a vehicle
- The ability to lift and carry up to 50-75 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to bend stoop kneel crouch.
- Ability to stand walk and sit for extended periods of time.
- Frequent use of hands for gripping handling and manipulating tools and equipment.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions including extreme heat cold dust humidity and exposure to noise.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks with precision.
- Ability to wear safety equipment such as gloves masks hearing protection and steel toe boots.
- Climbing ladders or steps to access equipment or work at heights (up to 10-14 feet or higher)
- Ability to work in potentially hazardous environments including exposure to fumes chemicals oils and grease.
- Other: Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (Fire Protection Equipment as needed for the job.)

Additional Information
Pay Rate: $27.47 per hour.
Pay is based on a multitude of factors including experience qualifications education relevant certifications internal equity and market data. Note: Internal applicants wage will be based upon the applicable compensation guidelines.
