CBC News is looking for an experienced and dynamic journalist who will be a senior reporter based in Toronto responsible for delivering coverage of news events and issues to a national audience.
Reporting to the Managing Editor of Domestic Bureaus and Content Units the successful candidate will be an exceptional journalist with a broad range of video audio and text storytelling skills aimed at live and on demand audiences. You are a story driver who breaks news and comes prepared to daily pitch meetings actively watching ongoing developments for new angles. You bring a deep list of contacts who reflect the diverse and changing population of Canada. You embrace experimentation in your storytelling in order to reach new and younger audiences and underserved communities.
You can manage multiple projects under tight deadlines and are able to regularly collaborate with other journalists across the CBC newsroom.
You will ensure that all CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices are met while providing fair balanced accurate thoughtful and immediate coverage to the communities we serve.
This job involves working a compressed week Saturday to Tuesday including early mornings and evenings. You are required to work full-time on site (in the office and in the field).
Key Responsibilities
Generate and execute compelling journalism that explores a variety of voices and perspectives from daily news to long-form features.
Go live on any platform whenever a story requires it.
Produce original content while also responding to breaking news and emerging stories in a fast-paced environment.
Pitch and cover stories that resonate with our national audience with a unique ability to find the national significance in local events.
Research and analyze complex issues using specialized sources to ensure our audience gets a deep nuanced understanding of important topics.
Collaborate effectively with local and network newsrooms to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Quickly identify significant issues and take decisive action to ensure they are covered accurately and effectively.
Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts with a wide range of sources.
Your Profile
You are a seasoned journalist with a minimum of 7 years of comparable experience who thrives in a high-pressure deadline-driven environment.
Exceptional storytelling skills with a proven ability to produce memorable writing and digital content.
A critical mind and outstanding interviewing skills.
Strong on-air presence and skill with live reporting.
Extensive knowledge of Canadian news and current affairs issues and a demonstrated connection to a wide range of underrepresented communities in the region.
Proficiency in using social media for research and reporting.
A collaborative team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work flexible hours including overtime as needed.
Knowledge of CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices
A university degree in journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
A valid drivers license and a driving record that meets CBC/Radio-Canadas insurance requirements are a must
