Program Overview:

KBRs ASTRO (Advanced Space Technology Research and Optimization) contract to provide mission equipment operations maintenance and upgrades to the USSFs AMOS site in Maui Hawaii. The AMOS site plays a vital role in national security by monitoring man-made objects in space and continuously developing next-generation capabilities to keep pace with the expanding space domain. This presents an incredible opportunity to push the boundaries of space and telescope technologies.

Position Overview:

KBR is seeking a highly skilled Telescope Engineer to design maintain and calibrate large telescope mounts electromechanical controls and optics. This engineer will assess and resolve structural issues affecting system performance stability and overall data quality. The will develop and improve calibration techniques to calibrate telescope and electro-mechanical-optical systems during all phases of repairs and system upgrades.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Advise and oversee electrical mechanical and optical engineers in assembly disassembly calibration and troubleshooting of large telescope systems
  • Mentora less experienced staff in developing and modifying models of site critical control system logic for telescopes and domes
  • Work with engineers and technicians to resolve vibrations sag and other structural issues that degrade data quality due to telescope motion position or vibration.
  • Assist with designing modifications to telescopes to improve performance and integrate new sensors
  • Assist with design of opto-mechanical systems and/or SW algorithms to improve image quality of telescope systems
  • Develop and implement tests to validate system performance
  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to improve system performance and reliability
  • Provide training and technical support to maintenance staff and telescope operators

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution.

Proficiency in Labview

Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

Experience analyzing and improving performance of large telescope systems

Minimum of 10 years experience in providing Engineering support of large telescope systems

Clearance: Active Secret clearance

Desired Qualifications:

Design of electro-mechanical actuators

Experience using Kalman filters in a practical setting

Compensation range:

$75-100/hour (Part time)

The offered rate will be based on the selected candidates knowledge skills abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation:

KBR may offer bonuses commissions or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus relocation benefits short term incentives long term incentives or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.

Work Environment:

KBR supports work from home when compatible with meeting contract requirements. AMOS is a dynamic work environment and this contract supports routine operations of and maintenance of mission equipment as well as the need to respond to real-world events. To the extent possible schedules are forecasted in advance but upgrades maintenance or significant tests require personnel to be present in the telescope facilities on Haleakala or Governments Kihei office. Candidate must have effective verbal and written communication skills; must be able to adapt communication style to suit different audiences or facilitate group discussions; develop accurate written materials to communicate information clearly and concisely.
