The Senior Advisor Provincial Genetics Program is a critical senior member of the team who is primarily responsible for delivering on the mandate of the program executing the long-term strategy of the program and leading consultations and initiatives with key partners. The Senior Advisor is a clinical staff role providing strategic program and policy advice. The Senior Advisor is a key program point of contact for partners at the Ministry of Health Ontario Health Clinical Leads Program Heads and staff from other Ontario Health programs.
The Senior Advisor is responsible for remaining up to date on emerging genetic tests and services drafting briefing notes maintaining program policies and procedures knowledge transfer and identifying and mitigating risk to the program and organization at large. As the subject matter expert for the program the Senior Advisor trains coaches and mentors program staff.
The Senior Advisor will work with analytics staff to develop and implement a process to regularly monitor trends in genetic testing. The Senior Advisor is responsible for ensuring that program and/or portfolio strategic objectives are a core component of expert consultations and advice to partners.
Here is what you will be doing:
Program Leadership and Clinical Advisor:
Provide Expertise and Advice: Offer subject matter expertise on genetic testing counseling and assessment for the organization
Lead Projects and Initiatives: Develop lead and execute projects policies and initiatives related to genetic testing services
Develop Strategies and Policies: Create strategies and policies to foster best practices in genetic services and address health system barriers
Research and Analysis: Maintain a detailed knowledge base of emerging genetic technologies and monitor trends in out-of-country genetic testing
Policy and Regulation: Ensure compliance with program regulations draft and revise policies and facilitate discussions with the Ministry of Health and legal counsel.
Mentorship and Capacity Building: Advise and mentor program staff providing technical coaching on genetics and genomics to build internal capacity
Relationship Management:
As the main point of contact for the program partner closely with internal/external partners to deliver communicate complex concepts build consensus and support change management
Ensure that the work of the unit is coordinated with other parts of the organization by sharing knowledge via written and/or oral communication developing new and innovation modes of information dissemination where needed.
Proactively engage with partners and collaborators to understand and anticipate their needs for information using surveys and key informant interviews; develop and foster partnerships with organizations and client groups to ensure the relevance and quality of our knowledge products
Develop and foster effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to Ministry Clinical Leads hospital administrators patient and family advisors other Ontario Health programs and committees.
Here is what you will need to be successful:
Education and Experience
Required: Degree in medicine medical sciences medical genetics or genetic counselling
Preferred: MSc and/or PhD trained genetic counsellor certified by the Canadian Board of Genetic Counselling (CBGC) and/or American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)
Required: Clinical and/or laboratory genetics experience with at least five years of hospital-based practice. Experience in an academic/teaching hospital is strongly preferred.
Required: Minimum 7-10 years of related work experience.
Required: Strong knowledge of clinical data genetic testing genetic technologies genetic services and treatments for genetic conditions.
Required: Strong background and training on evidence-based medicine through either formal education and/or problem-based clinical training.
Required: Extensive experience with issues management including the preparation of briefing notes and other communication material.
Required: Experience in conducting literature searches and jurisdictional scans to inform the development of policy proposals briefing notes and related documents.
Extensive experience in stakeholder engagement with clinicians Ministry staff patients/families hospital administrators and/or pan-Canadian health system and education partners including ability to facilitate meetings with internal/external stakeholders and consensus building.
Experience within the Ministry of Health would be an asset.
Proven track record leading/supporting large-scale projects in a health care environment.
Expertise and experience in data analysis policy analysis and business strategy and the ability to translate information into a convincing written argument or business case.
Knowledge and Skills
Understanding of Ontario Health Care: Strong knowledge of the Ontario health care landscape provincial funding regulations and policies1.
Health Literacy and Equity: Deep understanding of health literacy health equity and social determinants of health and their impact on health outcomes for cancer patients and others in Ontario2.
Contentious Issues Management: Experience in identifying contentious issues urgency and the need for escalation along with executing mitigating solutions3.
Lifelong Learning: Commitment to lifelong learning and professional development with a track record of being a self-directed learner who can assess the risks and benefits of new health technologies4.
Interpersonal and Relationship Management: Excellent skills in engaging and building relationships negotiation mediation conflict resolution and building consensus among diverse partners5.
Communication and Problem-Solving: Strong oral and written communication skills problem-solving critical/analytical thinking and decision-making abilities
