Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
In a cooperative team-based environment the Community Engagement Specialist will develop strong community relationships and provide leadership to key local Salvation Army events and initiatives throughout the year. Raising public awareness and visibility of The Salvation Army in the greater Windsor region. Develop and implement a solid plan pertaining to community engagement based on overall objectives and goals for the Windsor Centre of Hope COH.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
General
- Ensure that all duties are completed in accordance with the principles standards policies and procedures of The Salvation Army.
- Assist and support the Windsor COH to achieve its mission and have visibility in the community through increased presence and public awareness
- In collaboration with the Executive Director support and maintain efficient and effective community relationships including key stakeholders and other potential partners.
- In collaboration with the Executive Director facilitate the development implementation and evaluation of short- term and long-range strategic community engagement plans.
- Provide regular (weekly) updates to Executive Director and as requested provide updates to the Windsor COH Executive Team.
- Participate in regular Windsor COH staff meetings; provide regular reports related to community relations.
- At times when assistance is needed provide temporary coverage for client facing rolls in the Windsor COH.
Program
- Provide leadership and oversight of the special events planning including (but not limited to): weekly community meals program Christmas and Thanksgiving community meals and other events as required/requested.
- Prepare and submit program funding proposals and grant applications as required.
- Seek opportunities to build and foster relationships with local community partners community groups and organizations and potential donors.
- Liaise in the community for the purposes educating and garnering support for the WCOHs programs and services.
- Create and deliver presentations not limited to: Service Clubs Churches organizations schools in greater Windsor Region.
- Organize community events/programs to promote TSA brand in the greater Windsor region.
- Provide leadership and oversight of the daily operation of TSA Outreach Vehicle including (but not limited to): mobile community meals special events participation at community events volunteer coordination and street outreach.
Administration
- Maintain accurate written records logs of activities including activity reports and statistical information.
- Ensure that documentation and records are prepared in an organized and timely manner.
- Seek input from the Executive Director and Windsor COH Directors Team about program/funding needs.
- Develop and keep up to date an operating Windsor COH community engagement operating manual.
- Prepare and distribute quarterly reports/updates about the work of The Salvation Amy Windsor COH; submit a report to local Salvation Army partners as required.
- Create and maintain social media postings for volunteers and events.
Volunteers
- Recruit and provide applicable training to all volunteers as required for the Windsor Centre of Hopes programs and services including (but not limited to): community meals (Christmas and Thanksgiving community meals) outreach vehicle internal programs and services.
- Coordinate organize and schedule volunteers as needed.
- Provide direction and support to volunteers and ensure that they work together to achieve the purposes of the organization.
- Develop strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.
- Ensure that all volunteers maintain any mandatory training or certification; identify any training needs and report to supervisor.
Perform other position related duties as required.
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position reports directly to the Executive Director or designate.
- Accountable to the Windsor Centre of Hope Executive Team.
- Manage a partnership with community agencies by attending designated meetings events and groups associated with the work of The Salvation Amy Windsor COH.
- The incumbent is a group/work leader; directly supervises volunteers.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Has input to and/or participates in preparing departmental budget for Windsor COH.
- Receive monetary and non-monetary donations.
- Make wise use of resources working within annual budget.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent full-time position based on 40 hours per week.
- Flexibility in scheduling required some weekend and evening work required based on the community events schedules.
- Requires standing for long periods of time; being able to carry lift/move 30 lbs. and less; un-packing delivery vehicles; bending; twisting; keyboarding and sitting for extended periods of time.
- Will be required to carry a cell phone.
- to travel throughout greater Windsor region as needed.
- Required to wear appropriate Salvation Army identification when necessary; attire is business casual.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education Qualifications and Certifications:
- Minimum of two years post-secondary education in Community Engagement or Event Management.
- Valid certification in First Aid/CPR and Non-violent crisis intervention training would be an asset.
- Valid Ontario Class G Drivers License personal vehicle required and insurance current copy of drivers abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion is required.
- Must provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
- May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Minimum of two years of prior related experience in the field of community engagement experience in communications event planning public speaking and experience in a not-for-profit environment.
- Minimum of one year of supervisory experience; coaching leading and motivating volunteers.
- Experience with program funding proposals and grant writing.
- Experience building relationships in the non-for-profit sector and/or partnerships with a variety of stakeholder and community groups
- Proficient in business machines such as computer fax machine and photocopier; administration and files management procedures.
- Proficient in working in a computerized environment; must demonstrate strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word Excel Power Point.

- Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $52228.81 to $65286.01 with a maximum of $78343.21.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
