Description

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee (ZSM) is seeking a Conservation Careers Specialist to join a fun and talented team of professionals in supporting one of the most cherished community assets the Milwaukee County Zoo. This position takes a holistic view of conservation career pathways and programs operations within ZSMs Conservation Education Department. This role supports careers programming by developing and teaching conservation career-based programs for elementary to high school students supervising high school volunteers mentoring interns and further expanding career pathway programs. This role will also provide operational and administrative support to all conservation education programs playing a critical role in support of the ZSM mission to educate people about the importance of wildlife and animals and support the Milwaukee County Zoo and the Conservation Education departments vision to inspire and empower all members of our community to take conservation action.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development of the Conservation Education Departments career pathways programming in collaboration with the Conservation Careers Coordinator.
    • Help plan and implement the High School Assistant program including recruiting hiring onboarding scheduling coaching and evaluation.
    • Support a year-round youth volunteer program that complements the career lattice model that exists for college interns.
    • Design teach and expand Career Day programming to support ZSMs Access MKE Zoo goals.
    • Support conservation careers-related school and organizational partnerships such as Project SEARCH or Junior Achievement.
  • Serve as an educator for school year and seasonal education programs; write new and/or improve existing curricula plan and set-up classroom spaces implement programming and engage with members of the public.
    • Communicate with and train other educators who assist in teaching writing or supporting education programming.
    • Develop developmentally appropriate curricula with the whole child in mindincorporating different strategies and skill sets such as 21st Century Skills Empathy for Wildlife conservation science mindfulness techniques STEAM and/or project-based learning.
    • Employ strong customer service and interpersonal skills to connect to and relate with a variety of participants family members and volunteers ranging in age and diversity.
    • Lead all logistics for assigned programs ordering distribution and upkeep of program supplies/materials.
  • Provide technological administrative and operational support to the Programs Department.
    • Thoroughly learn Tessitura (CRM platform) Smartsheet (cloud-based collaboration tool) and Better Impact (volunteer information system) software.
    • Assist with public and school registration processes including program entry technology testing and registration day support.
    • Facilitate seasonal programs department catalog ordering process with a sustainability lens.
    • Assist with monthly work order and keeper calendar process.
  • Provide assistance to additional programs processes and teaching of all ages in order to support the education department and staff as needed.
  • Participate in training including animal handling training to ensure a safe and engaging experience for participants.
  • Attend staff department meetings and contribute ideas for improvements changes and new program ideas in relation to the conservation education department and the Zoological Societys mission.
  • Facilitate and support positive internal communications and organizational culture.
  • Act with integrity and professionalism in the workplace at all times and in representation of ZSM on Zoo grounds.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates or bachelors degree in education (formal informal environmental etc.) or related field (e.g. conservation wildlife biology zoology etc.).
  • One year of experience teaching youth in an informal or formal education setting required.
  • Experience writing environmental education curriculum a plus.
  • Proven ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and plan work activities and use time efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of and strong interest in mentorship career pipelines and career development.
  • Demonstration of excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills; Spanish or second language fluency a plus.
  • A high degree of technology savvy including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; proficiency in additional collaboration platforms (experience with Smartsheet a plus) CRMs (experience with Tessitura a plus) and resource scheduling tools preferred.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license access to a vehicle and adequate car insurance with the ability to frequently travel to program sites.
  • Ability to become CPR/1st Aid certified within 6 months of employment; biennial recertification required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including 1-3 weekend days per month.
