Job Description

Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies**

Nature of Work

This is legal social and crisis work involving delinquency dependency and cases involving children in need of supervision under the jurisdiction and supervision of the Family Court. Employees are assigned to work in the Intake or Probation division.
Intake:
Employees make initial decisions concerning the detention of juveniles in the Youth Facility or the removal of a child from an abusive or neglected home based on knowledge of the Criminal and Juvenile Codes of Alabama and departmental rules and procedures. Employees work with considerable independence but on complaints of serious or complex legal nature consult with higher-level court personnel. Work is primarily reviewed by a Juvenile Probation Supervisor or the Juvenile Court Administrator for conformity with legal procedures and points of law on an after-the-fact basis. Because of the post review of arrest warrants/petitions error in issuing warrants/petitions can have severe impact on the citizens or law enforcement officials involved.
Probation:
Employees are responsible for supervising and advising children and adults coming under the jurisdiction of the Court. Established casework methods are used to rehabilitate probationers and to equip them as useful members of the community. Work is usually received in the form of cases assigned by the court; and employees have considerable latitude in planning treatment of cases. Supervision from the Juvenile Probation Supervisor and Juvenile Court Administrator is received through conferences and review of results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in a behavioral or social science field such as sociology psychology law enforcement criminal justice corrections counseling or social work AND six (6) months experience in juvenile court or social service related field; or a masters degree in the behavioral science field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

NOTE: Qualifying education training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.



Special Requirements

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama Drivers License. Ability to obtain and maintain an Administrative Office of Courts (AOC) certificate. May be required to work overtime nights holidays and weekends and be on call. May be required to transport juveniles in county vehicles. Must have good moral character and have no record of convictions of misdemeanor or felony involving violence force or moral turpitude. Must be willing to submit to a thorough background investigation and drug screening to include pre-employment and random thereafter.
