Position in the organization
A Lead Design Engineer is a member of the Post Sales Engineering Team of Johnson controls and reports to the
Team Lead Design Engineering.
Objective
A Lead Design Engineer spends at least 65% of the available time on project-related work and of the available time 15% is needed for (self-) training to guarantee excellent professional knowledge.
The remaining 20% is spent standardizing hardware and software designs and methodologies for the assigned technical domain and future expansions and modifications of these domains. Additionally the Lead Design Engineer ensures that their peers are kept informed and that any related training needs are identified and communicated to the Team Leader Design Engineering.
A Lead Design Engineer ensures that the work will be executed at a high level of quality in accordance with the applicable procedures standards and legal norms and requirements set out by Johnson Controls and/or the customer.
Complexity
A Lead Design Engineer is responsible for managing multiple projects at once each differing in content complexity and scale. Their primary duty is to design program/configure and test high-quality technical designs and software. This ensures that project teams can execute their tasks swiftly and effectively. Consequently a Lead Design Engineer must possess extensive knowledge efficient planning abilities clear communication skills and meticulous documentation practices. Given that the employees of the Post Sales Engineering teams are spread across several locations in various countries English is most often the common working language.
Additionally the Lead Design Engineer reviews deliverables in their technical domain from peers or from work they oversee which is sent to other GFO Post Sales Engineering teams. They standardize hardware and software design methods for their domain. They keep peers informed about changes and new developments and identify necessary training needs communicating these to the Team Leader of Design Engineering.
Responsibilities
A Lead Design Engineer is responsible for:
managing multiple designs (projects) simultaneously varying in content complexity and size;
the conversion of contractual requirements into optimal designs while mitigating risks and reporting deviations;
high-quality functional solutions and software design including proper configuration and thorough testing;
detailed documentation and safe constructive collaboration with other teams;
up-to-date skills and knowledge efficient planning and clear communication with stakeholders;
providing technical direction and expertise to ensure projects meet high standards of quality and efficiency;
mentoring and supporting design engineers sharing knowledge and best practices to help them develop their skills;
standardizing hardware and software design methods within their technical domain ensuring consistency and efficiency across projects;
reviewing and approving technical deliverables to ensure they meet the required standards;
tackling complex technical problems providing innovative solutions and troubleshooting issues that arise during project execution;
assessing the competence knowledge and training needs of their peers;
maintaining a clear overview of ongoing design processes and associated planning.
Tasks
A Design Engineer has the task to:
receive and analyze technical requirements and contractual documents;
develop technical functional hardware and software designs based on contractual documents regulations and guidelines;
generate order lists of materials needed for projects;
maintain detailed documentation for designs and configurations;
provide instruction advice and support to project teams during the execution phase;
work constructively with other teams to ensure project success;
keep skills and knowledge up to date;
develop and implement standardized hardware and software design methods;
review and approve technical deliverables from peers and other GFO Post Sales Engineering teams to ensure they meet standards;
keep peers informed about changes and new developments within their technical domains;
identify and communicate technical training needs of themselves and their peers to the Team Leader of Design Engineering;
mentor and support design engineers sharing knowledge and best practices;
deliver on request consultation to the sales organization during pre-bid activities and the service organization during post-project activities;
contribute to the maintenance of QEHS processes procedures and instructions;
contribute to the maintenance of domain-related certifications.
Authorities
A Lead Design Engineer has the following authorities:
to revise and approve design documentation produced by their peers;
to revise and approve material/design specifications for calculations for offers for sales service or the project teams;
to outsourcing drawing and/or engineering work to third parties.
Qualifications
Required Degrees/Certificates
bachelors degree electrical engineering or equivalent through proven experience;
safety Certificate Contractors or willing to receive training;
impeccable conduct and willing to provide proof by mean of a formal certificate of good conduct and morals;
good language skills with regards to the local language and most certainly English;
excellent knowledge of using MS Office apps like Outlook Word Excel PowerPoint;
excellent knowledge and the ability to acquire knowledge of system-oriented configuration tools and software within their domain.
