Responsibilities:
- Act as a trusted legal advisor to leadership providing counsel on compliance mission objectives and risk management particularly in lending foreclosure defense scam prevention climate resiliency and charitable mortgage lending.
- Advise on governance and compliance controls for lending programs and related entities drafting and reviewing resolutions contracts and legal instruments.
- Counsel on compliance with federal and state lending laws fair lending and housing regulations consumer protection laws and cybersecurity requirements.
- Support regulatory responses audits investigations or litigation related to lending programs.
- Supervise legal correspondence and litigation filings in state and federal courts involving foreclosure bankruptcy or related matters.
- Collaborate with program leaders to integrate legal best practices into programs.
- Maintain governance documents policies standard forms certifications and compliance records.
- Review legal and policy implications of new legislation and regulations impacting programs.
- Represent the organization externally with bar associations funders advocacy groups and government agencies.
- Mentor junior legal staff or interns as assigned fostering a culture of compliance and learning.
- Stay current through continuing legal education and professional development.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
- Admitted to practice law in New York.
- At least six years of legal practice in lending litigation or real property (more experienced candidates encouraged to apply).
- Knowledge and experience in several of the following areas:
- Mortgage lending laws consumer protection and compliance.
- Civil litigation particularly foreclosure and consumer fraud.
- Financial institution and mortgage lender regulatory compliance.
- Real property trusts and estates real estate transactions disaster relief or public benefits.
- Excellent judgment analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple matters meet deadlines and lead projects in a fast-moving environment.
- Strong written verbal and presentation communication skills.
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work across diverse teams.
- Commitment to the mission of affordable housing and community empowerment.
- Preferred but not required: experience in cybersecurity/data protection tax-exempt lending entities or public policy/litigation in trusts and estates.
