About the Department:

The mission of the George Mason University Law Library is to support the instructional research and service missions of the law school. Primarily a teaching and research center the law library is the foremost means through which students and faculty gain access to organized information and knowledge. By fostering excellence in staff development of the collection and services offered to faculty and students the law library performs a unique and indispensable function in the educational process. The law library also serves as a valuable resource for the Northern Virginia legal community.

The George Mason University Law Library is located at 3301 Fairfax Drive Arlington VA 22201. Free parking is not available. The library is accessible from the Clarendon or Virginia Square Metro stations on the orange and silver lines. Several bus routes service the area. Roads in the area generally have sidewalks and bike lanes for those considering commuting on foot or bicycle.

About the Position:

The temporary part-time Library Services Assistant will help open the law library staff the circulation desk and support day-to-day library operations and tasks. The hours will be 7:45AM to 1:45PM Monday through Friday including an unpaid 30-minute break.

The position is 100% on-site at the George Mason University Law Library on the Mason Square Campus in Arlington Virginia. This position may begin as early as September 15 2025 and will run through December 19 2025. There is a potential for a temporary extension for work in January and February 2026 based on the librarys needs. The position reports to the Associate Director of the Law Library.

Responsibilities:

  • Opens the law library on weekday mornings following established procedures;
  • Responds to basic information needs in a polite and professional manner;
  • Checks-out materials including books study rooms and equipment;
  • Explains and enforces circulation and library policies including checking identification of all incoming patrons;
  • Answers directional and ready reference questions;
  • Shelves materials;
  • Assists the Head of Access Services with managing the student circulation assistants;
  • Meets daily at the end of shift with the Head of Access Services to coordinate department activities; and
  • Completes other duties as assigned including assisting with interlibrary loan and collection maintenance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Some college education or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Reliable and punctual;
  • Customer service experience; and
  • Good communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a library legal or academic environment.
