With over 700 employees Behavioral Health Services (BHS) at Denver Health is a large and rapidly expanding department that provides psychiatric care for patients in community emergency inpatient justice medical mobile and outpatient settings. Job Summary

The Medical Director of Psychiatry leads and provides clinical care to Psychiatric Emergency Services and Denver CARES in the department of Behavioral Health Services (BHS). This role supervises other physicians and clinicians both clinically and administratively. Duties include managing call schedules approving timecards providing feedback on job performance and overseeing clinical and operational metrics related to quality safety productivity finances and other relevant metrics and targets. Additionally this role will manage and coach staff to meet targets within these metrics and to provide departmental leaders with regular updates on the progress toward meeting targets in these metrics. Recruits new clinicians and works collaboratively with nursing and operational leaders to provide excellent clinical care and a safe work environment. Provides expert assessment and clinical psychiatric care including diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex co-occurring medical psychiatric and substance use disorders; homelessness poverty and treatment-resistance. Provides teaching and supports continuous quality improvement and Learning Health System work.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide expert care scholarly work and training while leading other providers clinical staff and administrative personnel as needed. (75%)
  • Focus on Superior Patient Care by 1) practicing evidence-based high-quality state-of-the art medicine; 2) encourage increased patient understanding involvement in care and treatment decisions; 3) achieve and maintain optimal patient access; 4) insist on departmental focus on superior patient service; and 5) participate in or support education and research. (5%)
  • Collaborate on Care Delivery by 1) leading multidisciplinary teams of case managers discharge planners nursing occupational therapy psychotherapists physicians and other professionals to provide clinical care; 2) including staff other physicians and management in both service and patient care improvements; 3) treating all members with respect; 4) demonstrating the highest levels of ethical and professional conduct; and 5) behaving in a manner consistent with Denver Health values and goals. (5%)
  • Listen and Communicate by 1) providing clinical information in a clear and timely manner; 2) requesting information and resources needed to provide care consistent with Denver Health goals; and 3) provide and accept feedback in a respectful manner from all staff. (5%)
  • Take Ownership by 1) providing leadership to focus on and improve clinically relevant outcome measures and service quality; 2) work to ensure personal departmental and organization compliance with all legal and educational requirements; 3) steadily improve the efficiency and economic aspects of your practice; and 4) Change by embracing innovations to continuously improve patient care service and organizational efficiency. (5%)
  • Educates trainees (5%)

Education:
  • Doctorate Degree From an accredited medical school. Required and
  • Post Graduate Diploma or Certificate Program Successful completion of a psychiatric residency Required and
  • Post Graduate Diploma or Certificate Program Board certification in general psychiatry Required and
  • Post Graduate Diploma or Certificate Program Board certification in a sub-specialty (e.g. addiction medicine) Required

Work Experience:

    Licenses:
    • MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required and
    • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required and
    • DEAREG-DEA Registration - DEA - Drug Enforcement Agency Required

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles procedures and techniques.
    • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
    • Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff support activities while providing quality medical care.
    • Able to receive detailed information through oral communications; express or exchange ideas by verbal communications.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications listening and social skills.
    • Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds skill levels and value systems.
    • Performs in a tactful and professional manner.
    • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
    • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite required.
    • EPIC experience preferred.
