Job Description

Title:Off-Campus Study Advisor - Temporary

Position Purpose:

The Off-Campus Study Advisor will be primarily responsible for advising students with some recruitment and administrative tasks during this interim period as secondary responsibilities. The position is ideal for an individual who wishes to contribute to and learn from a comprehensive advising approach in a department that touches all aspects of international education.

This is a full-time temporary position beginning at an agreed upon date in November 2025 and concluding at the end of February 2026.

The individual selected for this role may work on-site hybrid or remote. If remote the individual must have a residence in Maineand able to come to campus for pick up and drop of technology used for employment.

Job Duties:

  • Advise students about off-campus study opportunities (semester/year and summer) using an engaged advising approach that assists students integrate their plans with other aspects of their undergraduate experience and post-bac plans.
  • Provide information and support regarding goal-setting health and safety concerns visa assistance financial planning and other issues pertaining to appropriate decision making and preparedness to study abroad.
  • Follow up with students regarding inquiries and related advising questions.
  • Communicate with program representatives and faculty advisors to assist students with questions pertaining to the registration and application processes.
  • Support the Associate Dean & Director with risk management planning and response.
  • Become acquainted with Bates approved off-campus study programs this includes keeping up to date with programs on the approved list regularly checking provider websites attending webinars about specific programs and knowing the requirements for specific programs abroad.
  • Continue the flow of administrative tasks related to scholarship management as well as advising on scholarships.
  • Understand and be able to explain the Bates process policies and requirements for off-campus study to students including facilitating referrals to relevant campus partners.
  • Participate in information sessions and other events hosted by the Center for Global Education.
  • Develop marketing and promotional materials for department programs and events.
  • Working with the entire Center for Global Education staff team (including student leaders) to exchange information assist with team projects and support the overall success of the study abroad learning experience from planning through pre-departure and reflection.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Bachelors degree required.

Experience

  • Prior experience in education abroad academic or similar higher education advising; may include completed or continuing graduate level education.
  • Experience studying abroad at the undergraduate level or living abroad.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion and serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to international education and the promotion of cross-cultural understanding.
  • Understanding of the professional ethics and competencies developed by international education associations such as the Forum for Education Abroad and NAFSA.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students in an advising capacity.
  • Knowledge of principles and issues of study abroad advising including the ability to advise students considering study abroad.
  • Strong oral and written communication with particular emphasis on ability to engage students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong teamwork skills.
  • Ability to interact with institutional representatives faculty and students in a highly professional manner with an understanding of protocol and confidentiality.
