The opportunity:
CBC Windsor is looking for a skilled enthusiastic journalist and dynamic on-air presenter to be our stations television and video host for the next 12 months.
As the Host you will be an active journalist and a vital contributor to our daytime video journalism as well as hosting our 30 minute program CBC News Windsor with the latest hyper-local breaking and enterprise news.
You are invested in and curious about Windsor-Essex and you bring that commitment and familiarity to everything you do. You are passionate about digging deep explaining complex issues in straightforward ways and giving our community the information it needs most. You thrive on getting out into the community listening carefully to the people in our region and you want to build bridges with those who might not think to turn to CBC Windsor for their news and information.
You regularly pitch gather edit and file visual-heavy pieces that can live on audio and digital platforms and appear on our Windsor Morning and Afternoon Drive radio shows.
Key Tasks:
Works with the producer and team collaboratively
Performs a variety of tasks associated with the gathering preparation and on-air presentation of program material on video platforms including digital FAST social and linear broadcast
Comfortable and skilled gathering content or being live from the field.
Host live breaking news specials / remote shows as needed.
Conceives of original stories and concepts and works collaboratively to produce them.
Builds relationships with a diverse cross-section of the community to enhance our understanding of the region and to increase the range of voices and perspectives.
Pitch stories guests and program ideas
Help to script show
Keep informed about the community and the issues impacting it; build contacts and a knowledge base.
Participate in public and/or community relations activities as appropriate to promote the program(s) and/or the CBC as a whole.
Act as master of ceremonies moderator narrator or interviewer.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
Excellent reporting interviewing and writing skills. This includes providing live on-air reports interviews and analysis of complex events including breaking news.
Strong news judgment excellent general knowledge and superior knowledge of broadcast and digital programming.
Ability to generate original story ideas and creative treatments.
Engaged interested and immersed in a wide range of lived experiences with a deep knowledge of and connection to local communities.
Proven understanding of the stories of underrepresented communities and how to tell them.
Curious incisive and critical thinker with a broad range of interests.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and deadlines including a flexible schedule for a variety of shifts and overtime.
An engaging and intelligent on-air presence with a strong presentation style and ease with live work.
Proven ability to present material with credibility and authority in a range of situations including live events and breaking news.
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to give and receive feedback.
Writing skills that can elevate live programming.
A thorough understanding of and experience with social media tools.
Proven track record of collaboration within a team to ensure the show meets its mandate.
Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with producers and colleagues in story development and vetting.
Familiarity with photo and video equipment (including Canon DSLR and C cameras Sony PMW200 and various still/mobile cameras) along with editing tools like Avid Media Composer Dalet and iNews.
A university degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience is preferred.
5 years of comparable and relevant market experience is preferred.
