Job Summary
Under minimal supervision is capable of safely operating ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes at a minimum production rate of 35 mph (rate of 35 mph will be determined by the Crane Operator database).
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Inspection and preparation of crane for operation. Reports any physical or mechanical condition of equipment needing attention.
- Crane operation. Adheres to any specific operating and safety instruction.
- Interacts in a professional manner with co-workers and customers.
- Rigs & cleans cranes assists with monthly inspections assumes duties of Crane Team Leader in his/her absence and other duties as assigned.
- Training/instructing of operator trainees and other crane operators.
- Must demonstrate excellent leadership within the department both in and out of the cranes.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- At least 2 years of STS crane operating experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- A valid South Carolina drivers license is required to operate a Ports Authority owned licensed motor vehicle.
Skills and Abilities
- Must be certified in the safe and competent operation of the STS Crane.
- Must be able to operate STS cranes in a safe and productive fashion during vessel operations.
- Basic computer skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current General Hazmat Awareness training as required by 49 CFR 172.700 subpart H.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Individual must be willing to work flexible schedule including overtime. Schedule of work varies and may include weekend and night shifts. Schedule of work may change with minimal notice.
- Standing walking bending stooping kneeling pushing and pulling.
- Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs; overhead lifting may be required.
- Climbing stairs and/or ladders over 15 ft.
- Must have 20/20 vision with corrective lenses; peripheral vision/depth perception.
- Must possess visual capabilities for day and night operations.
- Must not be color blind.
- Must be able to stand and walk for long periods in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to hear spoken and radio communication and audible alarms and warning devices.
- Must speak clearly for face to face and radio communications.
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment as required (hard hat safety shoes reflective vest fall protection harness and hearing protection).
- Must have the ability to work in a restricted space.
- Must be able to work at heights 80 feet or more above ground level.
