The Grounds Crew Leader is a critical part of the schools mission. Named byArchitectural Digestas one of the Worlds Nine Most Beautiful Boarding Schools St. Andrews prides itself on the beauty of the campus and the natural ecosystem it inhabits. The Grounds Crew Leader plans and envisions the evolving long-term needs of the natural environment of the campus as well as the annual cycle of campus environment and landscaping needs for the education of students. He or she directs grounds team assignments and allocates resources to a small crew of groundskeepers engaged in landscaping annual grounds maintenance snow removal work orders the maintenance of trees lawns gardens shrubs athletic fields and related equipment as well as making inspections and recommendations regarding the care of the campus and its environs. The school is highly committed to grass athletic fields as a point of pride and an ongoing area of careful attention.

The grounds crew leader in particular leads a team whose work touches every aspect of school lifeevery student and employee is a critical stakeholder in the work and will at some point intersect with this person.

Qualifications

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the map of the core campus grounds and the budget and plan for the evolution and maintenance of the campus grounds and plantings. This includes but is not limited to: succession plans for trees shrubs and flower beds; cyclical maintenance needs for grounds infrastructure such as walkways sprinkler systems outdoor lighting fixtures bulkheads and docks; cyclical maintenance needs for grass athletic fields.
  • Develop and maintain the list of approved native species to be used in campus plantings.
  • Plan schedule assign and supervise grounds maintenance crew in all maintenance activities such as regular maintenance of athletic fields other grass areas walkways and roads sprinkler systems plantings and trees. Motivate and organize the team regularly inspect job sites and provide regular feedback as well as annual performance conversations for each team member.
  • Lead the team in the regular activities or road and sidewalk maintenance including grading repair drainage and the removal of snow and ice.
  • Direct and supervise the care and maintenance of athletic fields in close coordination with the director of athletics including establishing and carrying out the annual maintenance cycle long-term planning and care irrigation seeding overseeding aeration game-day preparation including line painting and preparation of seating areas.
  • Direct and supervise the care and maintenance of campus trees including the long-term plans for succession with native species and the annual cycle of care for all campus trees with special attention to stately trees and trees close to buildings. Liaise with the schools arborist in these activities. Contract and oversee scheduled annual and unplanned emergency tree removals.
  • Direct and supervise the care and maintenance of other plantings such as lawns shrubs and hedges planting and spraying and weed eradication.
  • Supervise grounds maintenance crew in campus clean-up projects and assist in special event projects as required.
  • Maintain records and reports as needed
  • As part of the facilities management team make recommendations for changes to procedures and systems as needed. This position is essential personnel in emergencies and must report to work in inclement weather or in other urgent situations as notified by the school.
  • Hire and on-board new team members provide instruction in the proper use of equipment as well as the methods for routine job responsibilities and special projects.
  • Assure proper routine maintenance is performed on all equipment including collaboration with all motorized equipment. Operate all ground equipment and make necessary minor repairs as needed. Equipment fleet includes: Zero Turn mowers tractors backhoe sprayers electric and gasoline Gators etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required bachelors degree in related field desirable.
  • Ten years of related experience in horticulture turf management landscape management or design or grounds maintenance.
  • Three to five years of supervisory experience with a track record of team building authenticity and mutual respect.
  • Demonstrated ability to ensure the proper use of all equipment.
  • Current valid drivers license or valid commercial class B motor vehicle license
  • Current valid herbicide and pesticide applicators license.
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job including heavy work with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
  • Good communication interpersonal and public relations skills.

Physical Demands

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures dirt dust fumes smoke unpleasant odors and loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting pushing and pulling objects over 50 pounds.
  • The work environment involves some exposure to hazardous or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions.
