:59 PMCBC Calgary is looking for a senior reporter to cover business and economic issues in western Canada for national and local audiences.
Reporting to the Senior Producer of the western business unit the successful candidate will be an exceptional journalist with a broad range of video audio and text storytelling skills. You have a solid understanding of the economic drivers of western Canada including energy tech and agriculture and a demonstrated ability to pitch and deliver on original and enterprise stories.
You are a story driver pushing our newsroom to tell the stories that will matter to our audiences. As a senior reporter you demonstrate sophisticated writing and analytical ability as well as editorial leadership. Excellent presentation skills are a must as you will be researching writing and packaging on demand content for national and local digital social radio and television programs and platforms. You have the ability to go live when needed on streaming television radio and on digital live pages. All your work will be governed by CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices. Generate and execute journalism that elevates a range of voices and perspectives;
Go live when the story demands it on video audio and through text (live pages).
Produce original content and be responsive to stories that are emerging ongoing. Respond
to breaking news.
Write scripts and file stories ranging from daily news to longer-form pieces and features as
required for both digital and broadcast platforms.
Pitch and cover news of relevance to our target audiences; understand how to tell local
stories to a national audience.
Research and gather information. Analyze complex issues from specialized sources to
enhance the understanding of CBC audiences.
Work collaboratively with local and network newsrooms.
Recognize issues of importance quickly and take effective action to ensure appropriate
coverage.
Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources.
Your profile:
Proven ability in the field and knowledge of the news media industry.
Excellent understanding of Western Canadian business and economic news
7 years of comparable and relevant experience preferred.
Exceptional reporting memorable writing and digital storytelling.
Critical mind.
Excellent interviewing skills.
Strong presentation skills for broadcast. Comfortable reporting live.
Proven ability to use social media platforms for research.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; a standout colleague.
Ability to work with a variety of teams.
Proven ability to work in a high-stress tight-deadline environment.
Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to work flexible hours and do overtime as needed.;
Knowledge of the public broadcasters role responsibilities and journalistic standards - an
asset.
Must possess a valid drivers license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum
requirements of CBC/Radio-Canadas insurance company.
University degree in journalism or equivalent preferred.
