Job Description

Outdoor Education Specialist
Learning Support Services
Huron Nature Area Outdoor and Environmental Education Centre

Applicants will be considered in the following order:

  • Qualified permanent ESS/OSSTF Bargaining Unit employees.
  • Qualified probationary temporary and Temporary Hourly Rated THR ESS/OSSTF employees.
  • Qualified external applicants (includes employees from other Bargaining Units)

Reporting to the System Administrator of Pathways and Experiential Learning the successful candidate will be responsible for the management and delivery of services to teachers and students from Grade 1 to 12 at the WRDSB Huron Nature Area Outdoor and Environmental Education Centres.

The successful applicant for this Educational Support Staff position Level H ( $74462 to $85666) will be working 35 hours per week 12 months per year effective as soon as possible.

Hours of Work: 8:00 am to 3:30 pm

Responsibilities:

  • Responsiblefortheplanninganddeliveryofprogramsofferedatthecentre which involve a significant amount of time outdoors;
  • Assist classroomteacherswithprevisitplanningandwithpreparingtheirstudentsfor participation in thecentreprogram
  • Assist the System Administrator - Pathways and Experiential Learning and classroom teachers in the development of programs and activities that reflect learning expectations in ministry curricula;
  • Assist the System Administrator - Pathways and Experiential Learning with communication to schools teachers and other WRDSB personnel on matters as they relate to programs for students offered at the centre and the general operation of the centre;
  • Maintain safety and well-being of all visitors to the outdoor setting taking into consideration physical concerns natural hazards extremes of weather water safety (ponds and streams) etc. as
  • Assist with meeting school and teacher requests for information resources and support;
  • Manage the centre program sites and resources;
  • Oversee the activities of secondary school co-op students and volunteers;
  • Liaise with partner organizations;
  • Participate in the development and implementation of department and system initiatives;
  • Assist with the organization and delivery of special events associated with outdoor and environmental education programming (e.g. Earth Day); and
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • University degree with a focus in outdoor and environmental science;
  • Well-formed environmental ethic;
  • Good working knowledge of flora fauna and ecological principles;
  • Computer literacy (working knowledge of Google suites in a Windows environment);
  • Current First Aid certification;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with students teachers and the public;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills;
  • Proven ability to take initiative and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision; and
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
