As a member of the Internal Audit Team you will perform Information Technology (IT) and security related audits to include reviews of application controls infrastructure components governance controls and integrated operational reviews. This position is responsible for planning and completing complex IT audits that assess the design implementation and effectiveness of controls across core systems including policy administration claims processing and customer-facing applications.

The Senior IT Auditor ensures compliance with internal policies industry best practices (e.g. NAIC SOX NIST COBIT) and applicable regulatory requirements. Working closely with IT security compliance and business leaders this role will identify control gaps cyber risks and areas of operational inefficiency. The role also supports key initiatives such as digital transformation cloud adoption data privacy and third-party risk management.

You must demonstrate a thorough understanding of IT risks and controls. You contribute to the overall success of the department and Markel by evaluating existing processes and controls and suggesting ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of audit processes. This position requires strong technical acumen and sound judgment as well as an understanding of the regulatory landscape affecting insurance and financial services providers. Limited travel to business locations when required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the planning and completion of complex IT audits across infrastructure applications and business systems ensuring alignment with regulatory and internal risk requirements.

  • Evaluate the design and effectiveness of IT controls including general controls (ITGCs) application controls cybersecurity measures and data protection controls.

  • Assess compliance with relevant industry standards like NIST COBIT and ISO 27001.

  • Perform audits of key systems including policy administration claims management financial reporting systems and customer portals.

  • Review cloud infrastructure and third-party service providers for proper access controls data protection and resiliency measures.

  • Plan and organize activities manage multiple priorities and complete assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Assist in planning the audit scope preparing the audit program and determining appropriate audit procedures based on professional judgment.

  • Independently conduct client interviews gather information apply the audit methodology and produce quality audit evidence and deliverables.

  • Prepare and organize work papers document conclusions and prepare formal status updates and reports in accordance with established guidelines.

  • Apply critical thinking skills and identify risks in developing processes and change initiatives.

  • Conceptualize end-to-end processes and dataflows and analyze interdependencies among systems.

  • Identify issues deviations and root causes; then display the ability (both written and verbal) to communicate issues and propose solutions to audit management and clients.

  • Display an enhanced understanding of the organizations IT risks controls and governance and how they relate to business risk.

  • Collaborate with internal audit peers IT cybersecurity compliance and business stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive audit approach.

  • Apply data analysis techniques within an audit to accomplish audit objectives and to present the results in a visual manner.

  • Assess and evaluate the integrity compliance and performance of AI systems ensuring they meet legal ethical and technical standards

  • Remain current on emerging technologies and threats such as AI ransomware or cloud security risks and incorporate them into risk assessments and audit planning.

Education

  • College degree in relevant field of studies

Certification

  • CPA CIA CISA or equivalent certification or working towards a certification considered a plus

Skills

  • Adaptable to a variety of diverse situations and project assignments and able to manage small to medium sized projects.

  • Must possess effective communication skills with ability to negotiate issues and make presentations to leadership.

  • Understanding of IT general controls application controls application development and security practices IT operations and IT governance.

  • Understanding of IT and related risk control frameworks (COBIT ITIL NIST COSO etc.).

  • Ability to employ and leverage data query and analysis tools and processes.

  • Understanding of AI types (e.g. Co-Pilot) along with their capabilities limitations and risks.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Applications including Excel functions for pivot tables and charts.

  • Proficiency in Office 365 Platform (OneDrive Teams etc.) is considered a plus.

Work Experience

  • 3-5 years of related IT Audit experience.

  • Experience in executing the end-to-end technology or security-related audits preferred.

  • Experience in financial services and/or a Cloud-based architecture considered a plus.
