Job Goal:
To plan and implement a program which creates an environment where students can learn and develop optimally. To assume responsibility for the design and evaluation of the school library. To assume leadership in directing the use of the school library by students and librarians. To administer policies and procedures necessary to maintain an adequate school library. To initiate library practices designed to promote the success and well-being of students. To develop and implement a program of effective community relationships with the library and related services.
Qualifications (minimum education licensure skills and/or experience):
- Applicant must hold a valid Louisiana Teaching certificate
- Louisiana certification as a Librarian and/or Media Specialist as specified in Louisiana Department of Education Bulletin 746.
- Additional criteria the Superintendent and/or Board may establish.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate and supervise the library to which assigned.
- Assist teachers in the selections of books and other instructional materials and makes library materials available to supplement the instructional program.
- Maintain a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials and instructs teachers and students on use of the system. Provide whole class instruction and individual instruction as needed.
- Provide a balanced collection of print non-print and digital resources that support the Louisiana State Standards appreciate diversity of interests recognize different ways of learning and promote independent reading and learning.
- Follow collection guidelines including text for emergent readers English Learners and students from diverse cultures.
- Collaborate with teachers on a regular basis developing lessons or units from the Louisiana State Standards that integrate information literacy and technology integration skills into the curriculum.
- Maintain a professional section in the library to serve as an aid for instructional use in the classroom and to promote professional growth among faculty members.
- Encourage reading in all students on all levels through motivational activities.
- Help students develop habits of independent reference work and develop skill in the search for use of reference materials for planned assignments.
- Evaluate select and requisition new library materials. Ensure materials are in accordance with state and school board guidelines.
- Notify teachers and students of new releases.
- Use standard procedures to process catalog circulate maintain inventory and weed the library collection.
- Arrange the facility to accommodate flexible access by classes and individual students.
- Design and implement an effective building media program.
- Establish and maintain a pleasant welcoming environment that is conducive to learning.
- Introduce students to community libraries and develop a working relationship with the community library.
- Arrange for inter-library loan of materials of interest or use to teachers.
- Monitor the library budget.
- Prepare and deliver all required library reports.
- Supervise students in out-of-class activities during the assigned working day if needed.
- Present and discuss material with classes studying a particular topic if requested by the teacher.
- Assist teachers with equipment operation and use. Issue equipment to teachers as needed.
- At the librarians discretion and principal approval issue equipment to students.
- Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for library aides student assistants and/or volunteers.
- Participate in service training faculty studies and when feasible professional organizations to facilitate professional growth.
- Perform periodic reviews and use ongoing informal and formal assessments in developing a long range strategic plan for improvement.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Librarians shall be expected to perform the following duties along with the completion of corresponding documents forms and reports.
Self-Evaluation
- Complete a self-evaluation and document the results on appropriate written forms.
Professional Growth Plan
- Develop a Professional Growth Plan in collaboration with the evaluation.
Supervision
- Supervise students in the library.
- Supervise students as needed when students are on campus.
- Supervise students prior to school and/or drop-off when assigned.
- Supervise students in the classroom if needed
- Supervise students as needed between classes during recess/intermission during lunch assemblies.
- Supervise students after school and/or pick-up when assigned.
Instructional Components
- Fulfill duties traditionally expected of those in the library/media specialist profession.

- Adhere to federal state system and school policies and regulations.
- Conduct conferences as needed. Maintain positive and timely interaction with parents relative to the performance or conduct of students in the library or while using library materials.

- Take part in the continuing in-service program of the schools.
School Support Activities
- Provide for the care and proper usage of school property. Maintain current inventory of items assigned to position.
- Attend faculty staff and department meetings.
- Attend PLC (teacher collaboration) meetings.
- Attend ILT meeting if applicable.
- Attend training sessions.
- Attend IEP/IAP meetings upon request.
- Attend parent-teacher conferences upon request.
- Attend back-to-school and open-house events.
- Attend graduation.
- Attend student discipline meetings/hearings upon request.
- Attend school board/committee meetings upon request.
- Be responsible for a reasonable amount of co-curricular and other duties beyond the regular school day as determined by the building principal.
- Attend/work concessions/gates at athletic events within school year.
- Attend all meetings and functions of those activities clubs or groups of which the employee is a sponsor/coach.
Physical Demands:
Librarians frequently engage in tasks such as shelving and organizing books which require bending liftin and reaching. Additionally they may need to move and rearrange furniture to create conducive learning environments or accommodate special events. Librarians also often spend long hours on their feet assisting students and teachers and may need to navigate the library space quickly to locate and retrieve materials. Furthermore the use of technology is integral to their responsibilities necessitating a fair amount of sitting and screen interaction.
Terms of Employment: 9 month
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel (Bulletin 130).
