Job Description

EMBL is looking for a senior engineer to coordinate activities set-up experimental pipelines and manage integration plans on the robotic systems and liquid handling automation used across its scientific core facilities. These workflows are heavily used in the organization for next-generation sequencing chemical and genetic screens microbial culturomics and phenotyping as well as high-throughput protein purification. The selected candidate will support several EMBL core facilities and research groups and will oversee and coordinate actions plans and needs for robotic automation at EMBL Heidelberg.

Your role

  • Consult plan and support automated workflows for large-scale setups (NGS microbial etc)
  • Evaluate automation systems (new) equipment and software to develop new pipelines purchase and integration to/ of robotic systems
  • Supervise and maintain liquid-handling instrumentation (e.g. high-throughput equipment)
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues
  • Organizing in-house technology transfer between facilities and EMBL groups
  • Interface EMBL with vendors of laboratory automation systems communicate with them on products scouting opportunities prices service contracts etc
  • Link to other EMBL sites and coordinate on automation pipelines plans and needs

You have

  • High proficiency in programming / developing complex methods for robotic systems such as automated liquid handlers and acoustic dispenser technologies
  • Experience in integrated robotic systems combining liquid handlers with other automation
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory workflows and ability to translate them into automation
  • Several years of experience in an interdisciplinary research environment
  • Excellent interpersonal organisational and communication skills
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • High adaptability and problem-solving skills
  • High motivation to support and train users in automation processes and technologies
  • Expert skills to manage timelines and resources effectively

Contract length: 3 years renewable up to 9 years

Salary: Grade 6; depending on experience and qualifications (monthly salary starting from 4580 after tax excl. pension & insurances) benefits
