Job Description

Title: Director of Canine Operations
Department: Operations
Reports to: Chief Operations Officer
Category: Full-Time; Salary Exempt

Supervises: Canine Intake Care and Behavior and Training Departments


The Director of Canine Operations oversees the safe efficient and humane operation of KC Pet Projects canine programs including Intake Care Behavior and Training. This role ensures the highest standards of animal welfare staff support and customer service while maintaining compliance with organizational policies and industry best practices.

Strategy & Alignment
  • Partner with senior leadership to set and execute strategic goals for canine operations that align with KC Pet Projects mission and organizational priorities.
  • Translate organizational objectives into actionable departmental plans and performance targets.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate program impact and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement to advance lifesaving outcomes and operational excellence.
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to ensure canine programs integrate effectively with overall shelter services and community engagement efforts.
Leadership & Personnel
  • Build and foster a collaborative growth-focused culture through training coaching and support.
  • Manage personnel functions including hiring onboarding scheduling evaluations and disciplinary actions in line with KC Pet Project policies.
  • Lead motivate and retain a high-performing management team.
  • Ensure staff are trained and supported to meet departmental goals and industry standards.
  • Promote positive communication and effective conflict resolution among staff volunteers and customers.
  • Create a success-driven accountable and compassionate work environment.
Administration
  • Support organizational financial goals by monitoring budgets and resources.
  • Prepare monthly reports contribute to strategic planning and assist with budget development.
  • Participate in leadership and board meetings as needed.
  • Perform opening/closing duties and represent the organization at professional events.
Operations
  • Monitor facility upkeep and communicate repair/replacement needs.
  • Review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) regularly.
  • Collaborate with the Veterinary team to ensure proper disease management and adherence to protocols.
  • Partner with leadership to evaluate and improve programs processes and staffing for efficiency and impact.
  • Maintain awareness of animal health and behavior reporting concerns promptly.
  • Provide updates and recommendations to the Executive Director regarding operational challenges.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required; higher education preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in animal shelter veterinary hospital/clinic or similar setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership with experience managing multiple direct reports.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare in a shelter environment required.
  • Experience in inventory oversight and management.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Windows-based computer systems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
  • Must be able to handle agency funds responsibly.
  • Valid MO or KS drivers license (or ability to obtain); must be insurable.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodation.
  • Commitment to humane handling of animals and safe use of chemicals and equipment.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases.

Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include 401K paid time off medical insurance and dental insurance.

KC Pet Project is a nonprofit organization that operates the Kansas City MO animal shelter caring for more than 16000 pets a year. We are the largest No Kill shelter in Kansas City.
