JOB TITLE: Media Relations Specialist
TYPE OF CONTRACT: Regular Consultant Level II
UNIT/DIVISION: Regional Directors Office APARO
DUTY STATION (City Country): Bangkok Thailand
DURATION: 3 Months (October-December 2025)
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
Under guidance of the Regional Director and the supervision of Head of Regional Communications and Media the Media Relations Specialist will plan and coordinate media pushes liaise with media write and edit news releases and other materials develop guidance and messaging documents and act as focal point for designated geographic and thematic areas. The Media Relations Specialist will also be responsible for bridging mainstream media and social/digital media news cycles weaving storytelling and narrative techniques to convey news on various platforms on all matters related to Myanmar and the regional Rohingya crisis.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Grow and maintain media relations including responding to enquiries arranging interviews pitching stories preparing materials for media and giving interviews to put food security and people facing hunger and malnutrition at the heart of agendas;
- Plan and coordinate media engagement for designated geographic and thematic areas in liaison with WFP experts and communications staff at headquarters regional bureau and country office levels;
- Plan and coordinate media activity relating to flagship WFP reports or initiatives;
- Research and develop messaging documents on designated subject areas for use by the COM and other stakeholders;
- Draft edit and rewrite communications materials to ensure clarity and accessibility;
- Respond to emergencies when requested by quickly travelling to the location and managing or co-managing communications activities on WFPs operations;
- Maintain the @WFPAsiaPacific Twitter handle and strengthen journalists engagement with it;
- Bridge traditional and digital (social) media news management including to serve as the point person for the relevant COM units (e.g. Digital and Creative Content and Branding);
- Provide advice to senior management as well as communications colleagues across all focal areas in order to ensure consistent quality communications;
- Liaise with units in and outside of COM to ensure a coherent and coordinated approach to communication activities including to act as the focal point for Emergency Response Cash- Based Transfers School Feeding Supply Chain Social Protection Corporate Planning and Performance Food safety amongst other areas that may be assigned;
- Perform other related functions as required.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:
- Strong communications initiatives planned and delivered around geographic areas and selected themes.
- Monthly reports on growth and reach of social media accounts managed.
- Well-researched and coherent messages and press releases.
- Spokespeople and leaders well-prepared and assisted during interview process.
- Productive relationships established/consolidated with COM units for which the position holder is focal point and HQ divisions pertaining to designated subject areas.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education: Bachelors degree in Communications Journalism Media Relations International Relations Public Relations Development Public Policy Humanitarian Affairs Business or other relevant fields.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of work experience in similar roles and in an international environment.
Knowledge & skills
- Strong writing skills and attention to detail.
- Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy.
- Good organizational and time management skills with an ability to plan ahead anticipate requirements problems and obstacles and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully and to work within tight deadlines.
- Knowledge and experience in managing a corporate social media account.
- Basic digital audio and video editing skills.
- Strong drive self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy.
- Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the UN World Food Programme.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required. An intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic Chinese French Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFPs working languages) is a plus.
Working arrangements Eligible for Occasional telecommuting as defined in the WFP Human: Resources Manual Chapter V Section 7.8.
