Full-Time Position overnight shift - Sundaythrough Thursday 10:30 pm 6:30 am

Job Description Summary:

The Fisher College Police Department is actively seeking a sergeant a pivotal role that supports the colleges overall mission and provides security and related public safety services for the protection of Fisher College students staff visitors and assets.

The Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising personnel of equal or lesser rank and is involved in a wide range of duties including planning assigning and directing the activities of subordinates. The Sergeant also plays a key role in monitoring and evaluating the performance of subordinates and provides written documentation that meets the requirements of Fisher Colleges formal evaluation process.

Generally working under the supervision of the Administrative Lieutenant the Sergeant shall have immediate control of the personnel under their command and shall be held strictly accountable for their efficiency effectiveness discipline appearance and overall conduct to ensure appropriate enforcement and compliance with the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the policies procedures and regulations of Fisher College consistent with the interests of protecting the lives and property of the members of the Fisher College the absence of any superior officer the Sergeant shall assume complete charge of the department until otherwise relieved by a higher authority.

The Sergeant must be adaptable and ready to work any shift including nights weekends and overtime as assigned. The department operates on a five days on two days off schedule balancing work and personal life.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act an individual to whom students and employees should report criminal offenses or who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities. A CSA shall report all allegations of Clery Act crimes they receive to the Public Safety Department so they may be investigated and published in the Colleges Annual Security and Fire Report. The statement below describes the principal duties of the Sergeant and is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties and responsibilities:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • All applicants must be certified as full-time police officers by the Massachusetts POST Commission.
  • Applicants who obtained their law enforcement officer certification from outside Massachusetts will require a permanent exemption from the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC).
  • Basic police firearms instruction and qualification course and/or recent requalification.
  • Highly efficient oral and written communication skills.
  • Applicants must be at least twenty-one (21) years old at the time of application.
  • Must possess and maintain a Massachusetts Class A Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms.
  • All candidates must have a valid Massachusetts Class D operators license at appointment.
  • Must possess and maintain First responder and CPR certifications.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions shift assignments and holidays.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of problem-solving methods and ability to familiarize yourself with the operating procedures of various Fisher College departments such as Residence Life Student Affairs IT Facilities and others with whom constant interaction is required.
  • Strong technology skills in the use of the Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) alarm access control and monitoring system and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word Excel PowerPoint).
  • Anticipates and embraces change; demonstrates willingness to achieve acquire and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions
  • Candidates should display comfort and expertise in a highly diverse multi-cultural multi-ethnic environment.
  • Must be in good mental and physical condition.
  • Candidates are subject to psychological evaluations drug testing and fitness for duty examinations as may from time to time be prescribed by the Chief of Police or their designee

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years of experience as a full-time POST-certified law enforcement officer in Massachusetts.
  • Associate Degree in criminal justice or related field.

Candidate Selection and Certification Overview:

  • Must provide three written letters of reference.
  • All candidates must obtain certification as a law enforcement officer by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) addition to POST certification all candidates must obtain their warrant of appointment as a Special State Police Officer (SSPO).
  • Fisher College Police will work with candidates to facilitate any necessary MPTC academy training POST certification and SSPO appointment.
  • All officers must complete Field Training and Performance Appraisal before they can work independently.
  • Candidate applications will be screened to ensure minimum qualifications have been met. If those qualifications have been met the candidate will be notified and provided information on the initial interview and hiring process.
  • Candidates who accept an initial interview and achieve a favorable assessment will advance to a second interview conducted by the Chief and/or Administrative Lieutenant.
  • Candidates who achieve a favorable assessment will advance to the following process which is a thorough and complete background investigation as required by POST in consultation with the MPTC and Massachusetts State Police Certification Unit to determine the candidates good moral character.
  • Any prior convictions for a felony whose name is listed in the national decertification index or database or untruthfulness are automatic disqualifiers for employment.

In evaluating candidates for this position the College may consider a combination of education training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge skills and abilities to perform duties of position.
