Job Description

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform on-site supervision to a 2-5 member crew of Traffic Maintenance Worker Is and IIs to include assigning directing and evaluating work. Position incumbents are responsible for preparing daily work reports providing support to the work crews and ensuring all assigned Traffic Maintenance Workers are properly trained. Position incumbents are primarily assigned to either the Street Striping subdivision or the Signing subdivision and perform the duties associated with that subdivision; however all position incumbents are cross-trained on the duties of both subdivisions and can be utilized as needed. Primary work responsibilities may include: serving as job foreman on street striping crew and/or sign crew; ensuring subordinate Traffic Maintenance Workers are trained in the safe operation of equipment used for street striping; overseeing the onsite layout of pavement markings for installation and revitalization projects; overseeing the construction of signs and lettering projects; serving as the primary operator of the computer and specialized software utilized for sign making; overseeing and assisting in the installation removal replacement and maintenance of signs; overseeing the maintenance and repair of equipment and machines; and assisting the crews in additional duties. Incumbents are supervised by a Traffic Maintenance Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and two years of experience at the Traffic Maintenance Worker II level or equivalent. Must have at least six months of lead or supervisory experience to include training and directing the work of others.

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid drivers license and insurable driving record. Must be available to respond to emergency and/or after-hours calls in order to replace major road signs such as stop and yield signs.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to walk on asphalt surfaces for distances of up to 5 miles in one day in order to assist with paint striping and sign operations. Physical ability to stoop crouch bend and kneel in order to assist with equipment operation and maintenance loading or unloading equipment and preparing surfaces for striping and signing ability to lift carry pull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds without ability to lift carry pull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 150 pounds with ability to frequently climb into and out of the bed of truck in order to secure tools or materials install or remove sign posts and clean road ability to lift and strike a sign post with a 16 pound sledge hammer using hand-eye coordination and physical strength.

WORK CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include direct sun exposure extreme heat and/or cold rain and lightning. Work includes exposure to strong fumes from solvents paints and other chemicals. Work involves frequent use of metal glass bituminous and other materials which may cause frequent cuts abrasions and bruises. Work is performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but not limited to: in close proximity to heavy traffic traveling at various rates of speed; in unkempt areas with tall weeds and potentially poisonous plants; and exposure to ants bees insects and other local wildlife. Work requires some extended work hours overtime night weekend and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty.
