Position Overview

The Director of Pupil Transportation reporting to the Chief Operations Officer is responsible for leading and managing all student transportation services. This role ensures safe efficient and cost-effective transportation for eligible students attending public charter parochial and private schools within Cincinnati in accordance with district policies and state/federal regulations.

The Director oversees a $45M transportation budget vendor partnerships routing systems and departmental staff while developing policies and practices that prioritize student safety operational excellence and customer service.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Oversee the development and implementation of short- and long-range transportation plans.
  • Provide leadership in designing safe efficient and cost-effective transportation policies and practices.
  • Advise the Superintendent and district leadership on transportation issues including weather-related closures.
  • Represent CPS in meetings hearings conferences and committees at the district community and state levels.

Operational Management

  • Direct day-to-day operations of the Transportation Department including routing scheduling and vendor management.
  • Administer contracts evaluate RFPs and manage vendor performance on safety customer service and on-time performance.
  • Oversee district compliance with federal and state transportation laws (ORC OAC CFR) and district policies.
  • Implement and maintain routing and service management software systems (e.g. VersaTrans On Screen My Stop).
  • Conduct routing studies and recommend school start times as appropriate.

Financial Stewardship

  • Prepare administer and monitor transportation budgets totaling $45M.
  • Ensure expenditures align with approved budgets and district fiscal policies.
  • Manage reimbursements for eligible students in lieu of transportation services.

Data Evaluation & Reporting

  • Collect and analyze complex transportation data to inform district decisions.
  • Develop and present reports scorecards and recommendations to leadership and the Board of Education.
  • Monitor and evaluate system performance implementing corrective actions as needed.

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Hire supervise evaluate and develop transportation staff.
  • Implement training and in-service programs for department staff.
  • Promote a culture of accountability safety and continuous improvement within the department.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

  • Serve as a liaison with school administrators families staff and community partners on transportation issues.
  • Communicate effectively with district leadership the Board of Education and the public regarding emerging transportation matters.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and timely responses to stakeholder inquiries and concerns.

Qualifications: Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelors degree required (business transportation logistics preferred).
  • Valid drivers license required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of pupil transportation leadership experience including supervisory responsibilities or ten (10) years in logistics with related leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of Ohio Revised Code Ohio Administrative Code and federal vehicle safety regulations.
  • Strong background in process design emergency planning vendor management and financial oversight.
  • Proficiency in data analysis reporting and computerized routing systems.
  • Exceptional organizational communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams and work collaboratively across boundaries.

  • Salary Range: $XXXXXX- $XXXXXX . Competitive commensurate with experience (aligned with CPS administrative compensation schedule).
