Job Description

The DAngelo Law Library contributes to the academic and scholarly success of the University of Chicago and Law School communities by providing rich collections and resources maintaining a premier scholarly environment and delivering superior library services. DAngelos collections are among the worlds finest for law research and enable comprehensive access to legal scholarship and interdisciplinary resources. DAngelo occupies five floors in the central tower of the Law Schools Laird Bell Quadrangle and is a valued partner in the Law Schools community of scholarship teaching and learning. The DAngelo Law Library is part of the University of Chicago Library system working cooperatively with other campus libraries to ensure rapid access to print and digital collections research and study spaces and expansive services. DAngelo team members foster and maintain a collaborative inclusive and supportive workplace culture to provide the highest level of service to the prolific and evolving University of Chicago Law School and University communities.

Under the supervision of the DAngelo Law Librarys Associate Director for Collection Services the Metadata and Resource Management Librarian participates in a wide range of Collection Services operations to support all facets of resource description and to facilitate discovery of the librarys print and digital collections. DAngelos Collection Services Department acquires organizes and provides discovery to the vast materials available to the University of Chicago community in all languages and in all formats. The Metadata and Resource Management Librarian creates and maintains accurate metadata in the library catalog the library website the Law Schools institutional repository Chicago Unbound and in other discovery platforms and tools. The Metadata and Resource Management Librarian works on projects to create access to collections and resources through web pages online guides and digital exhibits. As part of the Collection Services Department the librarian creates access to online and print content expediently and ensures that these materials are easily discoverable by our users.

Responsibilities:

  • Creates metadata in the library catalog the library website and through other discovery platforms.
  • Enables access to the librarys digital resources by ensuring accurate URLs and enhanced discoverability of purchased and subscribed resources.
  • Supports the discovery of digital resources through electronic resource management and troubleshooting.
  • Manages projects that support the work of the Collection Services Department and the DAngelo Law Library.
  • Develops maintains and enhances use of the librarys collections through digital projects including web exhibits.
  • Assists with adding and maintaining content and the development of the Law School and DAngelo Law Library archives.
  • Performs original cataloging and classification including NACO authority work in accordance with national standards and library-wide policies for materials in a variety of languages and formats including print and electronic continuing and integrating resources and monographs including rare books.
  • Works as part of a collaborative team on metadata creation and projects across the Library system.
  • Participates in the development and evaluation of the Collection Services department and DAngelo policies and procedures.
  • Serves as a resource for other library staff.
  • Serves on DAngelo and University Library committees and groups as well as professional organizations at national regional and local levels.


Required:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and an advanced degree.
  • Prior work experience in an academic research or law library.
  • Experience with metadata creation including MARC formats particularly serials and integrating resources.
  • Excellent communication interpersonal organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience cataloging in OCLC including authority work.
  • Experience working with legal materials and collections.
  • Experience managing electronic resources.
  • Experience working with archives in multiple formats.
  • Experience working with digital imaging software.
  • Successful project management experience.
  • Knowledge of at least one foreign western European language.
  • Problem solving and leadership skills.
