ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs mechanical repairs to colleges heavy equipment commercial trucks and trailers and other vehicles.
  • Diagnoses and determines repair servicing and maintenance requirements and repair or adjusting equipment for proper operation.
  • Creates and maintains a service and maintenance schedule.
  • Provides training to staff in the operations and maintenance of equipment as needed.
  • Overhauls and rebuilds engines and other components assemblies and systems.
  • Orders parts materials and supplies required for proper maintenance of vehicles and equipment and shop facilities.
  • Coordinates maintenance activities with operations to ensure that the fleet is ready at all times to meet operational needs.
  • Ensures proper documentation of all information required by regulatory agencies.
  • Assists and recommends changes and additions to equipment specifications in the interest of safety durability and maintenance economy.
  • Writes repair orders assigns work inspects and verifies completed work reviews recorded time and parts used on jobs maintains records file and controls parts stock level and accounting utilizing a computerized tracking system.
  • Evaluates capital needs and recommends purchase of new or replacement equipment machines tools and related items.
  • Requests quotes from local commercial shops for repairs which exceed the capability of the college program. Assists in evaluating quotes and recommends repair assignments.
  • Maintains cleanliness organization and safety of shop area.
  • Remains current in practices and trends related to position.
  • Attends related trainings workshops and professional development.
  • Actively participates in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and efforts to continuously improve services to students faculty and the College.
  • Creates and maintains a collaborative and collegial environment with colleagues and maintains effective working relationships.
  • Maintains professional ethics and confidentiality of students in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Advances the mission of FVCC by serving on or convening committees and contributing in the community in college-related activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Reports to Senior Instructor for the Heavy Equipment Operator Program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate degree in related field and two years of vehicle/heavy equipment maintenance experience OR
  • High school degree or equivalent and three years of heavy equipment maintenance experience AND
  • Possess a valid Montana commercial drivers license with air brake endorsement and with insurable license upon employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience administering the operations of a fleet.
  • Four or more years of experience in heavy equipment operation mechanics or commercial driving.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and tractor-trailer combinations.
  • Ability to meet a high standard of safety while working around and under equipment power machinery exposure to fumes high noise levels and chemicals.
  • Ability to earn and maintain required certifications.
  • Skill in critical thinking problem analysis and resolutions.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather on emergency repairs; required to wear protective clothing.
  • Ability to work within policies and procedures of FVCC
  • Ability and willingness to serve as an ambassador for the College by interacting appropriately with the college community and community.
  • Ability to maintain effective and positive professional relationships.
  • Ability to follow and issue directions.
  • Demonstrated communication technology customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to intermittently work non-traditional schedules including evenings weekends etc.
  • Ability to maintain regular and acceptable attendance levels .
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to pass a drivers license records check and maintain current Montana Drivers License with air brake endorsement and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to successfully pass a DOT Controlled Substances Test.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to respond in the event of an emergency.
  • This is a Heavy Duty job according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles U.S. Department of Labor and Industry. Heavy Duty involves exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 25-50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds continuously to move objects.
