Job Description
The Barnstable High School Music Program seeks a dedicated and skilled Assistant Band Director specializing in percussion to support our marching band and pep band programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for instructing percussion sections assisting with game performances and special events and collaborating with the Head Band Director to develop comprehensive percussion curriculum and performance opportunities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Head Band Director in developing and implementing percussion curriculum for marching band and pep band that aligns with the goals and objectives of the music program.
- Instruct and coach percussion students in techniques rudiments ensemble playing and performance skills for marching band and pep band performances.
- Collaborate with the Head Band Director and other music program staff to coordinate rehearsals performances athletic events and community events involving percussion sections.
- Provide individualized instruction and feedback to percussion students to help them improve their skills musicality and overall performance quality.
- Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes teamwork discipline and respect among all members of the percussion sections.
- Assist with preparation for marching band competitions pep band performances at athletic events and community performances including music selection drill instruction and logistical coordination.
- Support game day operations by directing pep band percussion sections during football games basketball games and other athletic events.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of students during rehearsals performances travel and other activities related to the percussion programs.
- Communicate regularly with students parents and school administrators to provide updates on the progress and achievements of the percussion sections.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices in percussion instruction and marching/pep band performance.
- Assist with equipment maintenance inventory and setup for rehearsals and performances.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience teaching percussion drumline marching band or pep band ensembles
- Strong knowledge of percussion techniques rudiments marching band drill and ensemble playing
- Experience with athletic event performances and pep band operations preferred
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with students parents staff and community stakeholders
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for games and events
