  • THIS POSITION IS FOR 6 HOURS PER DAY AT 205 DAYS PER YEAR.
    PAY FOR POSITION: PSE Salary Schedule Level 10 - $ 29.99

    Position is grant grant-funded position funded through the 2027-2028 school year.

    Description:


    GENERAL SUMMARY
    This positions responsibilities are to work with the McKinney Vento Liaison to identify and support families and youth who are experiencing homelessness. Responsibilities include performing school visits identifying and qualifying families and youth for McKinney Vento services and resources compiling data for grant compliance assisting in connecting McKinney Vento students and families with community resources and assisting the McKinney Vento Liaison with outreach efforts to increase identification of families and youth experiencing homelessness.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    Depending upon the individual assignment the McKinney Vento Specialist may perform all or a combination of the following in conjunction with the McKinney Vento Liaison:

    1. Identify families and youth experiencing homelessness through counselor and social worker referrals posters and brochures posted at schools and in the community school visits and through community outreach efforts.

    2. Act as a liaison between McKinney Vento students/families and school to ensure that they understand the guaranteed educational rights of youth who are experiencing homelessness.

    3. Provides support and resource navigation in conjunction with school counselors for McKinney Vento students and families in crisis.

    4. May help support school nurse to provide health services such as review of immunization records and any medical treatment needed.

    5. Establishes and maintains a network with school social workers and counselors. Work with staff in various departments such as Transportation Child Nutrition Student Records and others as needed to provide support to McKinney Vento Students.

    6. Maintains a variety of program records files and documents according to program standards and established guidelines as mandated by Dept. of Education OSPI the school district and which are required forgrant compliance.

    7. Attends a variety of meetings with other staff at the direction of the McKinney Vento Liaison; discusses student progress and further needs. May have flexible hours to allow employee to participate in outreach activities related to the program. Attends out-of-district meetings to help foster and maintain outside partnerships as requested by the McKinney Vento Liaison.


    OTHER FUNCTIONS

    8. Provide outreach to families during open hours of local food banks clothing banks and church resource events.

    9. Distribute McKinney Vento posters and information in stores and public spaces frequented by parents and youth.

    10. Consults with social service providers in schools to ensure continuation of needed services.

    11. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior including protecting confidential information consistent with district ethical guidelines.

    12. Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

    13. Attends conferences and trainings to enhance professional skills


    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
    Reports to the Director of Community Connections; will receive direction from the Community Connections Coordinators.

    MENTAL DEMANDS
    Required to shift priorities in response to program changes; frequently deals with distraught or difficult individuals; required to deal with the emotional and physical needs of families; required to adapt to a variety of environments and to model appropriate and effective behavior therein. Experiences frequent interruptions from various sources.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    Required to travel to various sites; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases in the classroom and while making community-outreach visits.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience
    Bachelors degree in social service or social science and experience with social service programs and agencies preferred. Associates degree in social service or social science and two (2) years of related field experience required.

    Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    Skill in written and oral communication. Ability to display sensitivity to at risk families. Knowledge of social services delivery programs. Knowledge of and ability to implement accepted methods of counseling and interviewing. Knowledge of community resources. Skill in creative problem solving. Skill in dealing with frustrated and/or difficult people. Effective time management skills. Knowledge of child development. Skill in crisis intervention. Ability to assess family needs for services. Ability to work
    independently and with minimal supervision. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students parents teachers specialists and outside agencies. Ability to maintain and submit accurate records according to established timelines. Knowledge of child protective laws and procedures.

    Licenses/Special Requirements
    Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation abuse injury or neglect of a minor. Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan. Valid Washington state drivers license to travel between sites.
