DescriptionWere hiring an Engineering Manager to join our Data Team this is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys leading and supporting a growing team. As we scale our systems to respond to increasing numbers of volunteers broader coverage across the UK higher data volumes and more variety of data and research usage ramping up we need to scale our engineering activity. The Engineering Manager role is a crucial part of Our Future Healths scaling plans and will enable multiple engineering teams to grow and work in parallel on different data systems and data products.
About Us
Our Future Health will be the UKs largest ever health research programme bringing people together to develop new ways to detect prevent and treat diseases. We are a charity supported by the UK Government in partnership with charities and industry. We work closely with the NHS and with public authorities across all nations and regions of the UK.
Our plan is to bring together 5 million volunteers from right across the UK who will be asked to contribute information to help build one of the most detailed pictures we have ever had of peoples health. Researchers will be able to use this information to make new discoveries about human health and diseases. So future generations can live in good health for longer.
RequirementsWe dont expect you to have experience with every single point but to be successful in this role youll need to have experience of some of the following:
- Comfortable communicating across technical and non-technical teams from engineers and scientists to product managers and business stakeholders
- Skilled at managing different perspectives and facilitating productive cross-disciplinary discussions
- Able to interpret technical and business needs manage expectations and handle challenging conversations with senior stakeholders
- Experienced in Agile development practices: GitHub code reviews unit testing TDD and CI/CD
- Proven track record of line managing and coaching engineers in high-performing cross-functional teams
- Strong understanding of information governance and data security especially for sensitive health data
- Hands-on experience managing live software services including observability logging error reporting debugging and incident management (Grafana Prometheus New Relic)
- Highly proficient in JIRA: sprint boards timelines metrics custom queries ticket standards and alerts; familiar with Asana Trello etc.
- Skilled in designing and deploying complex data schemas and building scalable efficient data pipelines for large datasets
- Expert in Python and Bash scripting
- Experienced with data lakes and big data tools like Spark and Databricks
- Proficient in cloud environments (especially Azure) and workflow orchestration tools (Dagster Airflow Prefect)
- Confident with containerisation and deployment using Docker and Kubernetes
- Worked directly with external data suppliers setting requirements defining SLAs and managing relationships
- Bonus: Familiar with healthcare and/or genetic data (NHS data patient-reported outcomes claims public health data genotyping NGS)
